Denison Math Pre-Algebra Review: Reigniting My Son’s Love for Math!

This is not a sponsored review!

As a homeschooling mom, finding the right curriculum can be a challenging journey. My son once had a deep love for math—he would get excited and eagerly dive into his lessons. Unfortunately, we hit a significant road bump with a curriculum that I personally loved but he ended up hating. Despite excelling in it and testing above grade level on our state’s required tests, he felt it dragged and sucked the life out of math for him. This experience left him with a negative outlook on a subject he once adored.

The Struggle with Saxon Math

The curriculum that caused this shift was Saxon Math. He loved Nicole the Math Lady. Saxon Math I loved I wished math had been presented to me this way. That year with Saxon Math 6/5 was stressful. Even though he performed exceptionally well, the structure and approach of Saxon Math made him lose interest. It wasn’t a matter of capability; he simply found it monotonous and uninspiring. We switched to a mastery-based curriculum afterward, which he did enjoy and performed well in, but that initial thrill and love for math never fully returned. I realized from this year that even though I love something my son may not and I need to set aside my own personal feelings and look at the overall relationship and curriculum. We finished Saxon Math 6/5 and my son threw the book on the last day. Now I do have Saxon Algebra 1/2, but its well hidden just in case.

No more busy work just getting to the math ! -Jai

Finding a Solution with Denison Math Pre-Algebra

In my search for a curriculum that would help detox my son from his negative experience and bring back his enthusiasm for math, I discovered Denison Math Pre-Algebra. I watched Arlene and Company Denison Math review three times she was the first homeschooler that was talking about Denison Math curriculum. I reached out to her and she gave me her insight. I studied Denison Math sample lessons and really did my homework. My son could have easily slid into the Algebra 1 Denison Math, but I decided to go with Pre-Algebra and then progress to Algebra 1 in January 2025. I decided to use it alongside our Oak Meadow Math 7 to give him a fresh perspective and a positive experience with math.

The lessons are slowed down and the teacher is encouraging and makes you feel like they are in it with you! – Jai

A Positive Change

At the time of this blog piece we completed two chapters of Denison Math Pre-Algebra, and the transformation has been remarkable. From the very first day, I saw the light come back into my son’s eyes. The battles we once had about showing work, reading the whole question, and doing all the problems have disappeared. Now, he insists on doing math every single day, including weekends. He’s excited to share what he’s learned and takes great pride in his accomplishments. I have been asked by many of my friends if I thought it was too easy or does it have enough rigor. I assured them I wasn’t looking for rigor I was looking to repair my son’s love for math. We have plenty of supplemental options for us to use this school year. You can check out a few of them on my blog if you are interested.

His self-esteem and confidence have soared, and he’s falling back in love with math. Choosing Denison Math Pre-Algebra was not about addressing a struggle or lack of capability. It was about reigniting his passion for math and improving our relationship, which had been strained by the negative experiences with Saxon Math.

Looking Forward

As we continue our journey with Denison Math Pre-Algebra, I plan to write another update in a few weeks to share our progress. For now, I am incredibly grateful to have found a curriculum that has not only revitalized my son’s interest in math but has also brought us closer together.

Denison Math Pre-Algebra has been a game-changer for us, and I highly recommend it to any parent looking to bring joy back into their child’s math education.

Unlocking Algebraic Understanding with Math-U-See Algebra 1: A Timberdoodle Review!

We received for Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics Universal Set for our honest review. This review may contain affiliate links at no additional charge to you.

As a homeschooling parent, navigating the transition to higher-level mathematics can be a daunting task. Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics Universal Set is on our curriculum list for the upcoming school year. Math-U-See has been a cornerstone in our homeschooling journey since kindergarten, providing a solid foundation in general math principles. Now that we are entering the algebraic stage of our homeschool we were excited to check out the new Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics Universal Set .

Math U See Approach

Math-U-See’s General Math Curriculum offers a structured and systematic approach to learning math concepts. The curriculum breaks down complex mathematical ideas into manageable chunks, allowing my child to build upon previous knowledge gradually. This sequential progression has been instrumental in fostering a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

One of the standout features of Math-U-See is its emphasis on concrete to abstract learning. The curriculum utilizes manipulatives such as base-ten blocks and fraction overlays to provide hands-on experiences that solidify mathematical concepts before transitioning to abstract representations.

This multi-sensory approach has been incredibly effective in bridging the gap between concrete understanding and abstract reasoning. Math-U-See prioritizes conceptual understanding over rote memorization, which aligns perfectly with our homeschooling philosophy. Rather than simply memorizing formulas and procedures, my child is encouraged to comprehend the “why” behind mathematical concepts. This deeper understanding not only enhances problem-solving skills but also instills a genuine appreciation for the beauty of mathematics.

Transitioning to Secondary Math

It is very important to point out that Math-U-See provides a readiness check that serves as a valuable tool for assessing your child’s readiness for algebraic concepts. By identifying areas of strength and areas that may require additional review, the readiness check helps tailor our approach to bridge any gaps effectively. This targeted assessment ensures that your child enters the realm of algebra with confidence and preparedness.

Welcome to Secondary Math

Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics Universal Set includes student work-text, test book, and digital pack access for the instructional videos, instructors guide and solutions. Math-U-See’s Algebra 1 program is a mastery-based approach. Rather than rushing through concepts, the program allows the child to solidify their understanding before moving on. The use of manipulatives, such as the Integer Block Kit, has been instrumental in making abstract algebraic concepts tangible and accessible. You can purchase the digital version of the manupulatives or the physical. In our case we have all the manupulatives because we have been long time users of the companies curriculum.

The sequential and systematic structure of the curriculum is a notable strength. Each lesson builds upon the previous one, creating a logical progression that aids in the understanding of complex algebraic topics. The clear explanations provided by the instructional videos, coupled with the hands-on approach, will significantly enhanced my child’s comprehension of algebra.

The incorporation of real-world applications is another commendable aspect. Math-U-See doesn’t just teach abstract mathematical concepts but emphasizes their practical use. This approach not only will engage my child’s interest but also demonstrates the relevance of algebra in everyday life.

The flexibility of the program allows for personalized learning. We can move at our own pace, spending more time on challenging topics or accelerating through familiar ones. The comprehensive instructor’s manual and answer key provide valuable support, making it easier for me as a parent to guide my child through the curriculum.

Assessment tools, such as the systematic review process and cumulative tests, ensure that my child retains and applies the learned material. The emphasis on mastery before progressing to the next level instills confidence and a deep understanding of algebraic principles.

From a parent’s perspective, Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics Universal Set is user-friendly and minimizes the anxiety often associated with teaching higher-level math. The well-organized materials, instructional videos, and additional resources make the program accessible, even for parents who may not have a strong background in mathematics.

Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics I foresee to be an invaluable resource in our secondary math homeschooling journey. Its mastery-based approach, hands-on learning, real-world applications, and flexibility make it an excellent choice for families looking to build a solid foundation in algebra. I highly recommend Math-U-See to homeschooling parents seeking an effective and user-friendly algebra curriculum.
