Solve The Mystery and Explore the World!

The India Box Experience

Our latest adventure with The Landmark Kids took us to India, one of my son’s favorite geographical and historical places. The India box was packed with activities and materials that made learning about this vibrant country both fun and educational. Here are some of the highlights:

Cultural Crafts: The box included materials for creating traditional Indian rangoli art, which my son thoroughly enjoyed. Designing his own patterns and learning about the cultural significance of this art form during Indian festivals was a unique and engaging experience.

Historical Insights: The detailed booklets provided fascinating insights into India’s rich history, including the Mughal Empire and the story of the Taj Mahal. My son was particularly captivated by the tales of Diwali, the festival of lights.

Interactive Activities: One of the standout features was the hands-on project to build a mini-model of the Taj Mahal. This activity was not only fun but also provided a tangible connection to one of India’s most iconic landmarks.

Culinary Adventures: The recipe card included in the box inspired us to try making a simple Indian dish. This was a fantastic way to explore Indian cuisine and understand more about the country’s culinary traditions.

Perfect for Middle Schoolers

These boxes are particularly well-suited for middle schoolers who thrive on interactive and visual learning. The activities are designed to stimulate curiosity and encourage deeper exploration into each topic. My son, with his keen interest in geography and history, found the India box to be an engaging treasure trove of information and activities.

Complementing Oak Meadow Curriculum

The Landmark Kids boxes integrate seamlessly with the Oak Meadow Grade 6 and 7 History curriculums. They provide a hands-on supplement that enhances the learning experience and brings historical and geographical studies to life. While studying ancient civilizations or world geography, these boxes offer practical activities that reinforce what’s being learned in the textbooks.

What Makes The Landmark Kids Boxes Stand Out?

My son has not only learned about new places and historical events but has also developed a deeper appreciation for different cultures. The India box, in particular, sparked numerous “rabbit trails” of learning, leading us to explore more about India’s geography, history, and traditions. These boxes have truly enriched our homeschool experience and provided countless hours of educational fun.

Why This Curriculum Stands Out

Why This Curriculum Stands Out

Faith-Based Integration For families seeking a faith-based science curriculum, Masterbooks General Science 1: Survey of Earth & Sky excels. Areas for Improvement

Diversity

One area where the curriculum could improve is in its representation of diversity. While the scientific content is robust, incorporating more diverse perspectives and examples would enrich the learning experience and provide a more inclusive worldview.

Completing the Lessons

In your homeschool, you can typically dedicate about 30-45 minutes daily to science. Masterbooks General Science 1: Survey of Earth & Sky fits seamlessly into this routine. Each lesson starts with a scripture reading, followed by the main content and related activities. I always look forward to new curriculum updates that can enhance our educational experience. I was super excited to see that Sonlight upgraded their Level F Science. This year, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on the newly released Sonlight Level F Science. The latest version includes some exciting updates, notably the new Discover & Do: Level F Science Experiments and some fantastic book upgrades. Here’s an in-depth review of what you can expect from this updated version and why I’m so excited to continue our upcoming school year with it.

Comprehensive Science Curriculum

Sonlight has a stellar reputation for its literature-based approach, and its science curriculum is no different. The Level F Science program is designed to foster a deep understanding of scientific concepts through engaging books and hands-on experiments. This year, the updates have taken the curriculum to a whole new level of excellence.

Discover & Do: Level F Science Experiments

One of the most exciting additions to the Sonlight Level F Science is the Discover & Do: Level F Science Experiments. These experiments are a perfect blend of fun and education, providing hands-on learning experiences that reinforce the scientific concepts covered in the readings.

Hands-On Learning

The Discover & Do: Level F Science Experiments kit comes with all the materials needed to conduct a variety of experiments at home. The experiments range from simple to complex, ensuring that there is something for every level of learner. This hands-on approach not only makes science more engaging but also helps solidify the concepts in a practical, memorable way.

Step-by-Step Instructions

The kit includes detailed, step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow. This has made it simple for me to guide my children through each experiment without feeling overwhelmed. The instructions also provide clear explanations of the scientific principles behind each experiment, helping my children understand the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of what they’re doing.

Engaging and Educational

One of the things I love most about the Discover & Do: Level F Science Experiments is how engaging they are. My children look forward to science lessons with excitement, eager to see what new experiment we’ll be doing next. The experiments cover a range of scientific fields, such as biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science, keeping the subject matter fresh and interesting. Sonlight Level F Science continues to emphasize critical thinking and analytical skills. The literature-based approach encourages my children to think deeply about the scientific concepts they learn. The new updates, in science, further enhance these skills by challenging my children to observe, hypothesize, experiment, and draw conclusions.

Flexible and Engaging Schedule

The Sonlight Level F Science curriculum is designed as a 4 or 5-day a week program. If you would liked the 4 day a week schedule it can be added for a very small fee. What I love most about this schedule is the flexibility it offers. Day 5 is reserved for hands-on activities such as experiments, field trips, or wrapping up the week’s lessons. This approach allows us to apply what we’ve learned in a practical setting, making the concepts more tangible and memorable.

Comprehensive Instructor’s Guide

The updated Sonlight Level F Science also comes with an enhanced Instructor’s Guide, which has been a game-changer for me. The guide is well-organized and provides a clear roadmap for each week’s lessons. It includes daily schedules, discussion questions, and additional resources, making it easier to plan and execute our homeschool days. The new guide also offers more flexibility, allowing me to adapt the curriculum to fit our unique needs and pace. While Sonlight does include some religious content within its curriculum, it is not overwhelming and is easy to omit if you choose. This makes the curriculum adaptable to families with different educational and spiritual preferences.

Sonlight Level F Science is versatile enough to be used as a standalone curriculum for students in grades 6-9. This makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of learners, providing a thorough and engaging science education that meets the Next Generation Science Standards.

Denison Math Pre-Algebra Review: Reigniting My Son’s Love for Math!

This is not a sponsored review!

As a homeschooling mom, finding the right curriculum can be a challenging journey. My son once had a deep love for math—he would get excited and eagerly dive into his lessons. Unfortunately, we hit a significant road bump with a curriculum that I personally loved but he ended up hating. Despite excelling in it and testing above grade level on our state’s required tests, he felt it dragged and sucked the life out of math for him. This experience left him with a negative outlook on a subject he once adored.

The Struggle with Saxon Math

The curriculum that caused this shift was Saxon Math. He loved Nicole the Math Lady. Saxon Math I loved I wished math had been presented to me this way. That year with Saxon Math 6/5 was stressful. Even though he performed exceptionally well, the structure and approach of Saxon Math made him lose interest. It wasn’t a matter of capability; he simply found it monotonous and uninspiring. We switched to a mastery-based curriculum afterward, which he did enjoy and performed well in, but that initial thrill and love for math never fully returned. I realized from this year that even though I love something my son may not and I need to set aside my own personal feelings and look at the overall relationship and curriculum. We finished Saxon Math 6/5 and my son threw the book on the last day. Now I do have Saxon Algebra 1/2, but its well hidden just in case.

No more busy work just getting to the math ! -Jai

Finding a Solution with Denison Math Pre-Algebra

In my search for a curriculum that would help detox my son from his negative experience and bring back his enthusiasm for math, I discovered Denison Math Pre-Algebra. I watched Arlene and Company Denison Math review three times she was the first homeschooler that was talking about Denison Math curriculum. I reached out to her and she gave me her insight. I studied Denison Math sample lessons and really did my homework. My son could have easily slid into the Algebra 1 Denison Math, but I decided to go with Pre-Algebra and then progress to Algebra 1 in January 2025. I decided to use it alongside our Oak Meadow Math 7 to give him a fresh perspective and a positive experience with math.

The lessons are slowed down and the teacher is encouraging and makes you feel like they are in it with you! – Jai

Skills Covered in Denison Math Pre-Algebra

Denison Math Pre-Algebra covers a wide range of foundational skills that are crucial for middle school students, including:

  • Understanding integers and rational numbers
  • Solving equations and inequalities
  • Working with ratios, proportions, and percents
  • Exploring geometric concepts
  • Analyzing data and probability

These topics are presented in a way that engages students and makes learning math enjoyable again.

Give me more accountability and independence – Jai

A Positive Change

At the time of this blog piece we completed two chapters of Denison Math Pre-Algebra, and the transformation has been remarkable. From the very first day, I saw the light come back into my son’s eyes. The battles we once had about showing work, reading the whole question, and doing all the problems have disappeared. Now, he insists on doing math every single day, including weekends. He’s excited to share what he’s learned and takes great pride in his accomplishments. I have been asked by many of my friends if I thought it was too easy or does it have enough rigor. I assured them I wasn’t looking for rigor I was looking to repair my son’s love for math. We have plenty of supplemental options for us to use this school year. You can check out a few of them on my blog if you are interested.

His self-esteem and confidence have soared, and he’s falling back in love with math. Choosing Denison Math Pre-Algebra was not about addressing a struggle or lack of capability. It was about reigniting his passion for math and improving our relationship, which had been strained by the negative experiences with Saxon Math.

Looking Forward

As we continue our journey with Denison Math Pre-Algebra, I plan to write another update in a few weeks to share our progress. For now, I am incredibly grateful to have found a curriculum that has not only revitalized my son’s interest in math but has also brought us closer together.

Denison Math Pre-Algebra has been a game-changer for us, and I highly recommend it to any parent looking to bring joy back into their child’s math education.

Hybrid Middle School Homeschooling

Homeschooling can be a rewarding and challenging experience, especially when you find yourself guiding a child through two different grade levels simultaneously. As a parent taking on the role of both teacher and mentor, the journey can be filled with unique opportunities for growth and learning. I’ll share my experiences homeschooling my middle school son through a hybrid 6th and 7th grade, offering insights, strategies, and the lessons learned along the way.

Switching Things Up

What I noticed when we started 5th grade was my son like many other homeschoolers we school year round, but then I noticed that he was in between grade levels and he was frustrated and complaining more. Our biggest fights where why he had to keep doing stuff he already knows. I agreed with him, it made no sense to have him do a complete curriculum for one grade level when he was really teetering really close to the next grade level if not higher. So I tried something new for 5th grade we would do a hybrid 5th and 6th hybrid school year and see how things would go.

The 2022-2023 homeschool year was a huge success, he was able to complete all of his remaining 5th grade subjects by December and January he went full throttle into 6th grade.  As I write this its December again and we are already forty percent into his 7th grade curriculum. What I can honest tell you is that middle school is tough and it comes with its challenges.

Different Look at Middle School

I consider middle school the check – up years. Middle School is pretty much in my opinion the time where you cement those foundations while exposing your student to more difficult material. Its also a time for your student to explore their interest more and developing more independence. My son has always been in between grade levels his entire homeschool journey.  There is no way I can give him middle school science for eighth grade he is ready for biology and the same with math he will be ready for Algebra in the fall of 2024 and English is also ahead. Now his writing skills are on grade level and we will keep at his pace because this year is the first year he has had formal instruction and is finding his rhythm.  Before heading down this journey I recommend some points to observe and consider.

Helpful Insights

  1. Understanding the Unique Needs of Middle Schoolers:
    • Explore the developmental milestones of students in both grades.
    • Recognize the individual learning style and preferences of your child.
    • Tailor your approach to meet the academic and emotional needs of each grade
  2. Creating a Flexible Schedule:
    • Establish a daily routine that accommodates both grades.
    • Allocate specific time blocks for core subjects and extracurricular activities.
    • Remain flexible to adapt the schedule based on your child’s progress and interests.
  3. Curriculum Choices:
    • Selecting age-appropriate materials for both grade levels.
    • Integrating interdisciplinary activities to foster a holistic approach to learning.
    • Utilizing online resources, educational apps, and interactive materials.
  4. Individualized Learning Plans:
    • Assessing your child’s strengths and weaknesses in each subject.
    • Tailoring lesson plans to address individual learning needs.
    • Encouraging self-directed learning and independent study.
  5. Collaborative Learning:
    • Exploring group activities and projects that involve both grade levels.
    • Encouraging peer teaching and collaboration between siblings.
    • Organizing joint field trips or educational outings.
  6. Managing Challenges:
    • Addressing potential obstacles, such as time constraints and balancing responsibilities.
    • Seeking support from homeschooling communities, online forums, or local groups.
    • Embracing flexibility and adapting to unforeseen challenges.
  7. Assessing Progress:
    • Establishing a system for tracking academic achievements and milestones.
    • Conducting regular assessments to gauge understanding and retention.
    • Celebrating successes and addressing areas for improvement.

Homeschooling a child through middle simultaneously doing two grade levels may present its share of challenges, but it also offers a unique opportunity for deepening your connection with your child and fostering a love for learning. By embracing flexibility, tailoring your approach to individual needs, and staying connected with the homeschooling community, you can create a fulfilling and enriching educational experience for your middle schooler.

Hearth & Story has emerged as a valuable resource for homeschooling journey, offering a well-rounded and engaging secular language arts program. If you are familiar with Pandia Press History Quest is authored by Lindsey Sodano the creator of this new language arts curriculum.

One of the standout features of the Hearth & Story curriculum is its emphasis on literature. The carefully selected reading materials expose my child to a rich variety of genres and authors, fostering a love for literature. The integration of classic and contemporary works ensures a balanced and comprehensive reading experience.

The writing component of the curriculum is equally impressive. The program provides clear and structured writing lessons that progressively build on foundational skills. The flexibility of Hearth & Story can be a significant benefit for an homeschooling schedule. The well-organized lesson plans and resources allow for easy adaptation to our pace and learning style. The inclusion of assessments and progress tracking tools has been helpful in monitoring my child’s development and identifying areas that may need additional focus.

The incorporation of grammar and language mechanics is seamless. Rather than being presented as isolated exercises, these elements are integrated into the broader context of reading and writing. This approach not only reinforces grammatical concepts but also demonstrates their practical application.

Final Thoughts

From a parent’s perspective, the support materials provided by Hearth & Story are comprehensive. The instructor’s guide, supplementary resources, and online support contribute to a smooth teaching experience, even for parents who may not have a background in education.

One aspect that particularly stood out to us was the “brain food” section, which quickly became our favorite. It’s amazing how it effortlessly stimulates young minds while providing valuable insights. Moreover, the curriculum’s design encourages independence in learning, allowing children to navigate through the materials with minimal assistance. As a parent, this feature not only promotes self-reliance but also instills confidence in my children’s academic journey.

It has been a delightful experience. This curriculum truly caters to the holistic development of a child, addressing various learning styles and fostering critical thinking skills along the way.

Regarding grade level suitability, I found this curriculum to be well-suited for advanced 4th graders, while still offering a challenge for those in 5th and even 6th grade. It’s a versatile resource that adapts to the varying needs and capabilities of students.

The graphics within the curriculum are not only visually appealing but also possess a calming effect, creating an environment conducive to learning. The beautifully illustrated content brought back fond memories of another curriculum we had previously used when my son was younger. He particularly enjoyed revisiting similar styles, using it almost as a nostalgic review session. The cost is of the complete curriculum is inexpensive and you have options to purchase individual areas of interest.

I was pleased to discover the literature sections, which included titles like “The Giver,” a book typically reserved for older grades. This demonstrates the curriculum’s commitment to offering enriching and thought-provoking material, catering to a wide range of reading levels and interests.

Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate exploring the upcoming 6th-grade language arts component. The flexibility of this curriculum is another commendable aspect; it leaves room for additional supplements, allowing for customization based on individual needs and preferences.

Overall, our experience with this curriculum has been nothing short of excellent. It’s a well-rounded educational tool that not only educates but also inspires young learners to explore and grow.
