EdAlive: Words Rock Online Review!!

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

We finished off our language arts curriculum in early May and the crew was offered an opportunity to review EdAlive Words Rock Online and I thought this would be a fun way to prevent the summer slide with this online program.

Words Rock Online is an online vocabulary and language arts digital platform game. Students are given games to play similar to battleship and they can earn rewards. While Words Rock Online is set up like a video game for the students to capture interest the meat of the program works on the following skills:

  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Punctuation and Literacy

My son who is a moderate gamer wasn’t very much interested in the games, I suspect it may have been just his willingness to learn how to play the slug game. He decided to work on the academics parts instead to my surprise.

Words Rock Online is designed for students ages 5-15 and it adapts to the students the students progress. We saw a lot grammar that my son has covered over this school year and previous years. The program isn’t a teaching program in my opinion it really is more so of a review. I think if students haven’t had a lot of exposure to grammar concepts they may find this program a little difficult to maneuver, but for those students who have a had a strong grammar foundations this program is wonderful for reviewing and keeping those skills sharp. Students are giving to chances to get theirs answers correct, before they move on. I wish that there was a explanation for the correct answers. Parents can check out their students progress and achievements in the parent dashboard, which is nice and can help you with your planning. We will continue to use Words Rock Online for our 4th grade year to help review

At the time of this review the cost of EdAlive Words Rock Online is $90/year with a monthly options for each child. EdAlive also has two more online programs be sure to check out those the reviews by clicking the banner below.

Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool Review!

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

There is no secret that our family loves music if you follow me on all my social media platforms. One of the ways we make homeschooling fun and interactive is by including music. The crew was offered an opportunity to review Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool. Each reviewer was given a 1-year subscription to acess the program online.

Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool is for children in grades K-6 it covers subjects Timelines, History, Science, Math, English Grammar, Latin, Geography, Hymns, and Scriptures. The program has 4 cycles to help the children build a solid foundation. There is a parent dashboard in which you can track each students progress and interactive quizzes.

For this review we used the Math and English Grammar memory work. The English Grammar section really was nice way to review old concept mastered and new grammar concepts. What I did to make this more helpful for my son is I went through his grammar curriculum and paired the weekly concept with a Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool English Grammar song and we used that all week at the beginning of our lessons. There were times when we had more than 2 concepts and we learned the songs for those concepts. There were a few times I would hear him humming the songs while he was working on his lesson independently. I did notice that over the few weeks have been using the Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool for English Grammar his need for me to review or assist him was less.

For Math, we used Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool in the same way as English Grammar but I was able to skip several of the earlier weeks and find the memory work areas that he really needed help with and this mom was in panic mode about teaching. Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool made teaching my son fraction conversion to decimals a BREEZE! This mama was in panic mode 2 weeks ago when I saw fractions to decimals conversions come up in his curriculum. I prepped for the week and braced for the upcoming lesson, sure enough, I put the song on and we started the lesson and instantly he understood the concept and kept moving along. I think the one thing I would like to see included in the memory work math would be integers and exponents.

Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool does have a Christian foundation, but we only used the math and grammar and for those wondering if there were faith-based items in the sections, we used I didn’t encounter them. There are fun links included in each cycle for the kids to explore outside the memory work. Students can earn badges as they work through the memory work and quizzes.

Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool worked well for my son because he is an auditory and visual learner. The songs are short and easy to learn, I do like the videos that follow the songs as they play because it gives a nice visual for the children. I also like the option that all the memory work can be done in each cycle can be done by the week or you can pick the ones that work for you. I plan to continue to use this over the summer as part of our summer homeschool daily do’s to help prevent summer slide.

Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool is tablet and mobile-friendly “there are streaming channel apps on AppleTV, Roku, and FireTV, which are great for allowing the whole family to easily see the programming content.” At the time of this review, the cost for a 1-year subscription for all 4 cycles is $439.99. If the 1 year subscription doesn’t fit your family’s budget there is monthly and yearly subscriptions for each cycle. Be sure to check out the other crew’s reviews on Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool by clicking the banner below.

Everybody, Always for Kids Review!

I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Over the last few weeks we have been transitioning our homeschool into our summer routine. What better way to swap out our morning readings with Everybody, Always for Kids by Bob Goff and Lindsey Goff Viducich.

The last 5 months we have been focusing on growth mindset and kindness. Everybody, Always for Kids has been a welcome addition to our journey. The stories in the book focus on kindness, service and empathy. Children are able to easily relate to the different lessons being taught in the stories.

Everybody, Always for Kids is written from the prospective of the Christian faith but I can honestly say that families of non-Christian faith will find the stories not intrusive and really just teaching the children to be kind to others and acts of service. I found the book very culturally inclusive. Diversity is one of the things I look for in books and we were very happy to see children and families of all ethnic backgrounds in the book as well as characters visiting other countries. Everybody, Always for Kids is a hardcover book with bright vibrant, glossy and sturdy pages.

Everybody, Always for Kids also includes a lesson plan which is fabulous. There are 5 lessons included in the lesson plan. Each lesson comes with :

  • Objective
  • Activity
  • Supply list
  • Lesson steps
  • Discussion questions

We did lesson 5 The Oaks Garden for Earth week and revisited the frog life cycle. My son really likes Everybody, Always for Kids he has been reading it the last few weeks on his own and we talk about what he has read. One story that stood out for us was Chapter 7 Building Schools it taught a lesson about gratitude and a little about the country of Afghanistan and the need for building schools for girls. As a mom Chapter 6 My Bucket also rang home for me about filling my own bucket something I dont do enough and I like the idea of having a real bucket and writing things I need to fill it with. This visual bucket is something I plan to do do not just for myself but for all of us.

We did not read the the book in order I let him read the stories that peeked his interest. The stories are short and they keep his interest and he enjoys them. We will continue to read through the rest of the book and look forward to any new of Everybody, Always for Kids by Bob Goff and Lindsey Goff Viducich series.

At the time of this review the cost for Everybody, Always for Kids by Bob Goff and Lindsey Goff Viducich is $10.27 for the hardcover on Amazon. We really like this book and recommend it if you are looking to add some positive literature for your students. Be sure to check out the other Crews reviews on Everybody, Always for Kids by Bob Goff and Lindsey Goff Viducich by clicking the banner below.

Teaching Textbook 4.0 Review!

I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Teaching Textbooks has been a staple in our home since the end of my son’s 1st-grade year. When the crew was given the opportunity to review for Teaching Textbooks I couldn’t be more thrilled for the opportunity. Our family was given a 12-month subscription to Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0.

The crew was fortunate to have access to both 3.0 and the newly launched Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0. My son was able to really compare the two versions of Teaching Textbook and let me tell you he really liked 3.0 but he LOVES Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0. If you arent familiar with this online digital math curriculum students start the lesson with a lecture and then they will complete 5 practice problems. Once the student’s complete practice problems they move on to do the 20 lesson problems. As the children work the problems if the program senses they are stuck they will give them a helpful hint. When a problem is answered incorrectly students are given an explanation of how to solve it.

The 3.0 version was a little dated with the graphics and at times I agree with him it was glitchy. Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 delivers the same quality of lessons as its older version, but the company has really given the platform a major facelift. I also the accessibility of Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 We have his apps on his laptop, iPad, and on my iPhone. No matter if we are on the road or he is using his iPad comfortably on the couch he can log into his apps. I find it really helpful that I can pull out my phone and check his progress in the evenings without having to jump on the computer and log in.

Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 is very versatile with added components such as the control center, students can watch lectures or skip them altogether and jump right into the problems. The control center also gives students a scratchpad, my son loves this new feature. The Control center also allows the student to change their animated buddies and wallpaper. Students can earn more buddies/wallpapers as they progress in lessons. Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 parent account gives you the same ability as the 3.0 to change settings and check grades.

Lil J notes:

  • Better Graphics
  • Does not glitch
  • Easier to log in
  • He can use it on his iPad
  • Cool Backgrounds
  • Still looks a little like 3.0
  • Likes 4.0 better than 3.0

The fresh new look of Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 is visually appealing to both kids and parents. We use Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 as our daily warm-ups for our homeschool day. You can use it if you like as your math curriculum or as a supplement. Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 website has a placement test and I highly recommend you take this before deciding on the level that best works with your student. Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 does offer a free trial for the first 15 lessons for you to try, they also have a family account you can purchase if you have more than one child. . The Crafty Classroom Superstar Spelling Review!

Disclaimer: I received this product free through the Homeschool Review Crew.

Spelling is not my kiddos favorite subject as much as he loves to read him and spelling have still yet to become best friends. We currently have a spelling curriculum that we use and I really love, but my son says he wishes it had some more fun interactive spelling activities. The crew was given the opportunity to review several of products from The Crafty Classroom and I chose to review the Superstar Spelling K- 5 curriculum.

Our family no stranger to The Crafty Classroom we have used several of the companies products, one of my favorites is Interactive Math: Kindergarten . We have used almost everything the company has published over the years. The Crafty Classroom Superstar Spelling K- 5 curriculum brings the same fun graphics and variety. What I like about this curriculum is I can add my OWN WORDS ….you have no idea how grateful I am that this curriculum is editable. Just being able to plug in my son weekly spelling words is a true blessing, because a lot of digital curriculum you have to use their word list.

So here is the breakdown Superstar Spelling you plug in your own words and they are generated into the different lessons there is a 20 word limit. The program is designed to be used over a 5 day school week. The words are organized into 4 blocks of 5 and the lessons are clearly marked by blocks. What I did for my son was I gave him a pretest using the included pretest sheets on Mondays. Any words he got wrong those were the words I plug into the curriculum and printed out those activities for him to complete.

My son really only having to really study the words he didn’t know how to spell. Then there is what is called the Starting Line-Up I love this concept because it was really motivational for him because he could clearly see what he knew, warm up words (words he can learn quickly), workout words (words that will give his brain a workout), and the challenging words (words that were going to be the most difficult to learn) . I really like this concept because my son didn’t feel overwhelmed, but motivated.

The Crafty Classroom Superstar Spelling comes complete with games, worksheets, centers, assessments, and review. The program appeals to all learning style and makes it easy to just plug in your words and print. The program completes any spelling curriculum or can be used alone with your own personal word list. If your student is a traditional student you can also benefit with from this curriculum because you can but a twist on studying spelling words with your student. With over 30 pages of activities you are bound to find something your learner will love. My sons favorite activity was the Tic-Tac-Toe.

After using The Crafty Classroom Superstar Spelling I can honestly say my son and spelling have become better acquainted and I will continue to use this the rest of the school year and the upcoming year.

SchoolhouseTeachers.com Review!

Disclosure: I received this product free through the Homeschool Review Crew

As I started to plan for our 2nd semester of homeschooling I didn’t anticipate that my son would finish his 3rd-grade math curricula before May. We received Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership from SchoolhouseTeachers.com again this year to review along with the crew.

The Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership from SchoolhouseTeachers.com has always been my go-to when I need to plan unit studies or needed some extra supplements for our lessons. This 2nd-semester SchoolhouseTeachers.com the Fourth Grade Homeschool Curriculum Box I have been loving to use to plan with. SchoolhouseTeachers.com has a curriculum box for K-12th that covers all the core subjects and electives. For this review, I will talk about the Fourth Grade Curriculum box.

What I am really enjoying using with the Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership from SchoolhouseTeachers.com is the Fourth Grade Curriculum Box. As mentioned above my son has finished his third-grade math curricula and so I need to supplement until his new fourth-grade curricula are released. I could easily use the math curricula in the fourth-grade box but my son really loves the one we use he is also enjoying the math in the fourth-grade box because it gives him more variety.

What I like is that I can pull down the math guide for Fourth grade and find the lesson I want to use for him and then go directly to the lesson and use the lesson plan and the pdf. Over the holiday break, I wanted my son to practice some long division, it took less than 10 mins for me to find the lesson and print and go. Homeschool Health, Mom Life, Reviews

MathandAlgebra.com Review!

The end of last school year it was like a light bulb went of in my son and he now loves everything math related. He went from a struggling math student to a math wiz over night. Now this mom is not a math lover and so I have to always keep my own skills up t pair when teaching math to my student. It was a great relief to this mom to this mom when the Crew was offered a one-year family subscription to MathandAlgebra.com.

MathandAlgebra.com is an online math program that provides detailed short instructional video lessons, quizzes and worksheets. MathandAlgebra.com also has a detailed parent dashboard for parents to track their students progress and for record keeping. Students can learn at their own pace and have the opportunity to earn badges to keep them motivated to continue to progress. Students can work on

  • Basic Math
  • Advanced Math
  • Pre-Algebra
  • Algebra

My son worked on Basic Math along side working in his own curriculum. What I really like about this program is that it gives my son an opportunity to learn math from someone else besides myself. MathandAlgebra.com video tutorials are perfect for him to see skills done in real time and the instructor is friendly and encouraging. MathandAlgebra.com also gives this mom a break when I need from time to time. The Basic Math has 10 topic with 6 to 12 lesson per topic.

Topics for basic math include Whole Numbers, Fractions, Decimals, Ratios, Geometry and so much more. MathandAlgebra.com is a complete math curriculum in my opinion for students in grades 3rd-12th grade. The one-year family subscription to MathandAlgebra.com comes with 3 users and I politely slid myself into one the slots so I can also refresh my own math skills. MathandAlgebra.com is a great homeschool planning tool for those doing 100% homeschooling and it is also a great supplement if your student is doing virtual school and you feel they need a little more support.

My son is still working in the whole numbers section working on multiplication and long division. I very sure in the next few weeks we will work on the geometry section as well. This is going to be a great supplement for his math because he has already burned though 90% of his math curriculum and I was going to be needing something to hold him over and keep his skills sharp.

MathandAlgebra.com is a wonderful online math program . At the time of this review the yearly plan is $99 for 3 students, monthly plan for $15 for 3 students. Be sure to check out the others crew reviews on MathandAlgebra.com by clicking the banner below.

Until the Next,

Journey Homeschool Academy: Experience Biology: Elementary Review!

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

I first encountered the Journey Homeschool Academy when I saw they were offering a Backyard Bugs course in June and I thought this would be a great way to bring some fun to the summer studying about insects and bugs right in the backyard. The classes were fun and easy and could be done at our own pace. Then I noticed the crew was given an opportunity to review Journey Homeschool Academy Experience Biology: Elementary and I new this would be a great opportunity to transition us from the Backyard Bugs class to their Experience Biology: Elementary we really have enjoyed the previous program so I know this would be a hit.

Journey Homeschool Academy Experience Biology: Elementary is a virtual online elementary biology class geared for students ages 6-12. There are 30 lessons that can be done in 15 minutes or longer depending on how you navigate the lessons. For us we paired it what were studying in our science curriculum about plants and I used it as an introduction to our science unit to help in laying foundations and we built around it. The lesson are meant to be done in order but you can adapt them to work for you if you are studying a particular area of study in biology.

Journey Homeschool Academy Experience Biology: Elementary is done in 3 steps:

Step 1: Watch the engaging video of about the lessons biology topic. The videos are interesting and provide excellent visuals and explanation about the current topic. I used this to help with introducing the topic from our current science curriculum.

Step 2: Kids will engage in hands on activities, copy work, memory cards and simple basic quiz which I told my son was just a show me what you know page. I used these activities to add more fun and interactive learning to our science curriculum. I really like the quiz part because it really wrapped up what we were learning in our science curriculum and with Experience Biology: Elementary giving me an excellent resource to add to our homeschool portfolio. The memory cards I sized them down and laminated them and put on a book ring for my son.

Step 3: Explore Living books and dig deeper into the topic with the suggested resources. This step is brilliant because our science curriculum we have for the year doesn’t recommend a lot outside resources. I was able to find the suggest resources at our local library and Amazon, some of them we owned as well. I took full advantage of these resources.

Journey Homeschool Academy Experience Biology: Elementary can be used as stand alone science curriculum or as an addition to another curriculum. I have been searching for an online science curriculum I could use with my son this school and I am glad the crew was able to review Journey Homeschool Academy Experience Biology: Elementary. If you are looking for a faith based curriculum this also can be used. Now I will tell you that this curriculum isn’t heavily faith based. In my honest opinion I didn’t really see or hear much religion in the curriculum. I did notice some of the copy work but it wasn’t overly done and you can easily omit this part if it doesn’t work for you.

If you are looking for a biology curriculum for your student I recommend this one. Its not prep heavy and requires a lot science background. Journey Homeschool Academy Experience Biology: Elementary is a perfect introduction to science for students ages 6-12 years. The company also offers Experience Astronomy: Elementary course as well as Experience Biology: Upper Level. Unfortunately at the time of this review the free Backyard Bugs course is closed. The cost of Journey Homeschool Academy Experience Biology: Elementary at the time of this review is $129. This is a very good program if you are new to homeschooling or veteran homeschooler.

Spelling Shed and Math Shed Review!

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

I love creating variety in our homeschool so my son doesn’t get bored. We received 12 months of access to both Math Shed and Spelling Shed. These are both digital online learning platforms that make it easy to add some fun to your math and spelling lessons. Math Shed and Spelling Shed is for 1st- 5th grade (Spelling Shed can stretch to 8th) and if you have advanced kindergartner this program can be beneficial. Students earn points to they can use to retrieve items for their avatar.

Math Shed is a fun fast paced math fluency practice game. Students are able to practice several skills focusing on :

  • Number Bonds
  • Powers of 10
  • Times Tables
  • Division
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Year 4 Multiplications
  • Negative Numbers

Math Shed has designed the program so students can work on the targeted skills in depth by giving the students the option to select concept area and the degree of difficulty (easy, medium, and hard). My son is working on his time tables and I really enjoyed how he could pick from mixed, single, related +decimals, and year 4 multiplication. Having this option has allows him to cover multitude of skills at pace that works for him. The times tables also includes division and the facts 0-12 which I love because kids cover two skills at once.

Spelling Shed gives parents a variety of spelling list they can choose from for their student. Parents can choose from these already generate list that are phonics, dolch, fry, and UIL 3rd – 8th. Parents also have the option to create their own list, I personally used this option for my son. I really like the option of creating my own list because I was able to input my sons current homeschool spelling curriculum and have him use the program 3-4 days a week to practice. The teacher hub also allows you to do pre/post test and you can track your students knowledge. The teacher also lets you track all your students activity and gives you the ability to assign activities. Just like in Math Shed students can choose their activities and level of difficulty and earn points. The games offer the students a variety of ways for them to practice their words.

At the time of this review the cost for Math Shed or Spelling Shed is $24.95 a year for up to 5 students, if you decide to purchase both you can save 15% off. Both programs can be used on the computer or tablet. We have IOS system in homes and so my son played on his Ipad and our Macs. Overall these are great programs if you are looking to add some fun to your homeschool and summer enrichment.

Be sure you check out the other Crews reviews of Math Shed or Spelling Shed by clicking the banner below.

Until the Next Time,

Mom

Memoria Press, Prima Latina Complete set Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor compensated in any other way.

My family is no stranger to learning a new language, currently my son has learned two languages and we are exploring our options this year to learn a third. With that being said Latin have been one of the languages I have always been curious about because so many words in English and Spanish have Latin roots. If you prefer a classical education in your homeschool then the Prima Latina Complete set from Memoria Press is a must-have!

For this review we received Prima Latina Complete set is for students grade 1-4, it is faith based curriculum so will see several references in the lesson to faith. There are 25 lesson and each lesson uses 5 of the enclosed flashcards that is sent with the Prima Latina Complete set. Along in the set you will receive a teachers and student manual, DVD, CD and flashcards. In the Prima Latina Complete set students will learn the basic Latin alphabet and pronunciation of vowels. Students will also learn a total of 125 words as well learn numbers up to ten.

Lesson 1

The Prima Latina Complete set also teaches students grammar for the Latin language. We used the curriculum to build my son vocabulary knowledge. My son quickly recognized a lot of words that he knows in Spanish and he made the connection right away with a lot of the words and it made lessons easier for him to work through. I combined Prima Latina Complete set with his Spanish curriculum and that seem to work best for us.

What I like about the Prima Latina Complete set is the vocabulary building skills he has given my son. Learning some of the roots helped him with decoding words he didn’t know and their meanings. We played games with the flashcards in which I would give him the Latin word and he would have to tell me a word in English or Spanish that uses the Latin root and meaning. For families who are using the curriculum in correlation with their faith the DVD and CD provide guidance for lessons and pronunciation, songs and prayers. For us we used it to build his vocabulary skills.

The Prima Latina Complete set from Memoria Press at the time of this review $90.90 plus taxes and shipping. Be sure to check out the other Crews review on Memoria Press other Latin Complete Sets by clicking the banner below.
