Denison Math Pre-Algebra Review: Reigniting My Son’s Love for Math!

This is not a sponsored review!

As a homeschooling mom, finding the right curriculum can be a challenging journey. My son once had a deep love for math—he would get excited and eagerly dive into his lessons. Unfortunately, we hit a significant road bump with a curriculum that I personally loved but he ended up hating. Despite excelling in it and testing above grade level on our state’s required tests, he felt it dragged and sucked the life out of math for him. This experience left him with a negative outlook on a subject he once adored.

The Struggle with Saxon Math

The curriculum that caused this shift was Saxon Math. He loved Nicole the Math Lady. Saxon Math I loved I wished math had been presented to me this way. That year with Saxon Math 6/5 was stressful. Even though he performed exceptionally well, the structure and approach of Saxon Math made him lose interest. It wasn’t a matter of capability; he simply found it monotonous and uninspiring. We switched to a mastery-based curriculum afterward, which he did enjoy and performed well in, but that initial thrill and love for math never fully returned. I realized from this year that even though I love something my son may not and I need to set aside my own personal feelings and look at the overall relationship and curriculum. We finished Saxon Math 6/5 and my son threw the book on the last day. Now I do have Saxon Algebra 1/2, but its well hidden just in case.

No more busy work just getting to the math ! -Jai

Finding a Solution with Denison Math Pre-Algebra

In my search for a curriculum that would help detox my son from his negative experience and bring back his enthusiasm for math, I discovered Denison Math Pre-Algebra. I watched Arlene and Company Denison Math review three times she was the first homeschooler that was talking about Denison Math curriculum. I reached out to her and she gave me her insight. I studied Denison Math sample lessons and really did my homework. My son could have easily slid into the Algebra 1 Denison Math, but I decided to go with Pre-Algebra and then progress to Algebra 1 in January 2025. I decided to use it alongside our Oak Meadow Math 7 to give him a fresh perspective and a positive experience with math.

The lessons are slowed down and the teacher is encouraging and makes you feel like they are in it with you! – Jai

Skills Covered in Denison Math Pre-Algebra

Denison Math Pre-Algebra covers a wide range of foundational skills that are crucial for middle school students, including:

  • Understanding integers and rational numbers
  • Solving equations and inequalities
  • Working with ratios, proportions, and percents
  • Exploring geometric concepts
  • Analyzing data and probability

These topics are presented in a way that engages students and makes learning math enjoyable again.

Give me more accountability and independence – Jai

A Positive Change

At the time of this blog piece we completed two chapters of Denison Math Pre-Algebra, and the transformation has been remarkable. From the very first day, I saw the light come back into my son’s eyes. The battles we once had about showing work, reading the whole question, and doing all the problems have disappeared. Now, he insists on doing math every single day, including weekends. He’s excited to share what he’s learned and takes great pride in his accomplishments. I have been asked by many of my friends if I thought it was too easy or does it have enough rigor. I assured them I wasn’t looking for rigor I was looking to repair my son’s love for math. We have plenty of supplemental options for us to use this school year. You can check out a few of them on my blog if you are interested.

His self-esteem and confidence have soared, and he’s falling back in love with math. Choosing Denison Math Pre-Algebra was not about addressing a struggle or lack of capability. It was about reigniting his passion for math and improving our relationship, which had been strained by the negative experiences with Saxon Math.

Looking Forward

As we continue our journey with Denison Math Pre-Algebra, I plan to write another update in a few weeks to share our progress. For now, I am incredibly grateful to have found a curriculum that has not only revitalized my son’s interest in math but has also brought us closer together.

Denison Math Pre-Algebra has been a game-changer for us, and I highly recommend it to any parent looking to bring joy back into their child’s math education.

Living Healthy: Nutrition, Exercise, and Making Wise Choices from Master Books!

We received Master Books’ Living Healthy: Nutrition, Exercise, and Making Wise Choices for out honest review.

I’m always on the lookout for educational materials that not only meet our state’s requirements but also engage and excite my son. Master Books’ Living Healthy: Nutrition, Exercise, and Making Wise Choices has become a strong contender for our upcoming homeschool year for our health curriculum, and for good reason. This year our state is requiring that my son fulfill his health requirement and I needed to find something that wasn’t boring but interactive.

Educational Style – Eclectic

The best way to describe the Master Books style of homeschooling is eclectic. By definition, eclectic is to derive ideas, styles, methods, philosophies from a variety of sources. Our curriculum development team has over 25+ years of homeschooling experience. They have worked with gifted to special needs students, implemented top selling homeschool solutions, and employed a number of cutting-edge teaching methods and philosophies of learning. Using that wealth of experience, we take the “best of” ideas to create an effective, individualized learning experience for students based on their strengths, readiness, and interests.

Comprehensive Content

This curriculum covers a wide range of topics essential for understanding and maintaining good health. From nutrition and exercise to making wise lifestyle choices, each aspect is explored thoroughly, providing a solid foundation for a holistic approach to health education.

Engaging Presentation

What initially drew us to this curriculum was its visually appealing presentation. My middle school son, who has a keen interest in human anatomy and health, was immediately captivated by the colorful text and diagrams. The depth of information provided in an accessible format made it an obvious choice for us.

Integration with Physical Education

One of the unique features of this curriculum is its integration with physical education. It can easily be incorporated into our weekly PE regimen, providing a seamless transition between health education and physical activity. The PE inclusions make it easy for me to check off my PE boxes each week for my son. My son has been enjoying looking over the exercises and adding them to his boxing workout.

Flexible Approach to Religion

While it’s important to note that this curriculum is not secular and contains religious references throughout the book, I appreciate that these references can be omitted if needed. This flexibility allows families of diverse backgrounds to tailor the curriculum to their preferences while still completing the material.

Quarterly Structure

The text is divided into four quarters, each consisting of nine weeks. This organized structure not only helps us plan our homeschooling schedule but also ensures that we cover all the material thoroughly. Additionally, each quarter includes recipes, vocabulary exercises, games, puzzles, and more, enhancing the learning experience. Another great perk is that Master Books’ Living Healthy: Nutrition, Exercise, and Making Wise Choices is available as lesson plan in our digital planner. There is also a complete supply checklist included for all seventy two lessons. Students will learn topics that are covered within each quarter listed below.

  • Exercise
  • Nutrition
  • Personal Health
  • Environmental health and safety

Master Books’ Living Healthy: Nutrition, Exercise, and Making Wise Choices is Charlotte Mason inspired. Each lesson focuses on four areas vocabulary, scripture (easily omitted for secular homeschoolers), exercise, activity, test and additional extensions. I really appreciate the easy turn our sheets that are already three ring hole punched.

You may see parts of our style that follow a traditional approach, the living stories and shorter lessons similar to a Charlotte Mason approach, or a child-centered, hands-on approach like the Montessori method. Our focus is on developing solutions that are neurodevelopmentally appropriate and use recognized cognitive learning practices to get the best results in a real-world environment.

Standout Features

One aspect of this curriculum that truly stands out is its emphasis on real-world relevance. The text is filled with practical examples and scenarios that students can relate to, making the learning experience both meaningful and engaging. It caters to my son’s interests in human anatomy and health while providing a comprehensive education in all aspects of health and wellness.

How We Will Use and Final Thoughts

The plan for use is to fulfill state requirements. The laid out schedule is for on lesson a week per the text. We may average three lessons a week, but I have feeling my son will complete all four days a week. I am also leaning towards starting over the summer break so we can have a few buffer weeks already completed just in case we get a little off track.

Master Books’ Living Healthy: Nutrition, Exercise, and Making Wise Choices may be a resource in our homeschooling journey. It offers a comprehensive, engaging, and adaptable approach to health education that I highly recommend to other homeschooling families. Hybrid Middle School Homeschooling

Homeschooling can be a rewarding and challenging experience, especially when you find yourself guiding a child through two different grade levels simultaneously. As a parent taking on the role of both teacher and mentor, the journey can be filled with unique opportunities for growth and learning. I’ll share my experiences homeschooling my middle school son through a hybrid 6th and 7th grade, offering insights, strategies, and the lessons learned along the way.

Switching Things Up

What I noticed when we started 5th grade was my son like many other homeschoolers we school year round, but then I noticed that he was in between grade levels and he was frustrated and complaining more. Our biggest fights where why he had to keep doing stuff he already knows. I agreed with him, it made no sense to have him do a complete curriculum for one grade level when he was really teetering really close to the next grade level if not higher. So I tried something new for 5th grade we would do a hybrid 5th and 6th hybrid school year and see how things would go.

The 2022-2023 homeschool year was a huge success, he was able to complete all of his remaining 5th grade subjects by December and January he went full throttle into 6th grade.  As I write this its December again and we are already forty percent into his 7th grade curriculum. What I can honest tell you is that middle school is tough and it comes with its challenges.

Different Look at Middle School

I consider middle school the check – up years. Middle School is pretty much in my opinion the time where you cement those foundations while exposing your student to more difficult material. Its also a time for your student to explore their interest more and developing more independence. My son has always been in between grade levels his entire homeschool journey.  There is no way I can give him middle school science for eighth grade he is ready for biology and the same with math he will be ready for Algebra in the fall of 2024 and English is also ahead. Now his writing skills are on grade level and we will keep at his pace because this year is the first year he has had formal instruction and is finding his rhythm.  Before heading down this journey I recommend some points to observe and consider.

Helpful Insights

  1. Understanding the Unique Needs of Middle Schoolers:
    • Explore the developmental milestones of students in both grades.
    • Recognize the individual learning style and preferences of your child.
    • Tailor your approach to meet the academic and emotional needs of each grade
  2. Creating a Flexible Schedule:
    • Establish a daily routine that accommodates both grades.
    • Allocate specific time blocks for core subjects and extracurricular activities.
    • Remain flexible to adapt the schedule based on your child’s progress and interests.
  3. Curriculum Choices:
    • Selecting age-appropriate materials for both grade levels.
    • Integrating interdisciplinary activities to foster a holistic approach to learning.
    • Utilizing online resources, educational apps, and interactive materials.
  4. Individualized Learning Plans:
    • Assessing your child’s strengths and weaknesses in each subject.
    • Tailoring lesson plans to address individual learning needs.
    • Encouraging self-directed learning and independent study.
  5. Collaborative Learning:
    • Exploring group activities and projects that involve both grade levels.
    • Encouraging peer teaching and collaboration between siblings.
    • Organizing joint field trips or educational outings.
  6. Managing Challenges:
    • Addressing potential obstacles, such as time constraints and balancing responsibilities.
    • Seeking support from homeschooling communities, online forums, or local groups.
    • Embracing flexibility and adapting to unforeseen challenges.
  7. Assessing Progress:
    • Establishing a system for tracking academic achievements and milestones.
    • Conducting regular assessments to gauge understanding and retention.
    • Celebrating successes and addressing areas for improvement.

Homeschooling a child through middle simultaneously doing two grade levels may present its share of challenges, but it also offers a unique opportunity for deepening your connection with your child and fostering a love for learning. By embracing flexibility, tailoring your approach to individual needs, and staying connected with the homeschooling community, you can create a fulfilling and enriching educational experience for your middle schooler.

From ancient civilizations to modern times, Heritage Humanities covers a vast expanse of human history, making learning informative.

Cultivating Critical Thinking

One of the primary goals of education is to cultivate critical thinking skills. Through in-depth analysis of historical events, literary works, and philosophical concepts, students learn to think critically, analyze information, and form their own opinions. The program encourages discussions and debates, fostering intellectual curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world.

Final Words

Heritage Humanities is valuable resource for those families looking for true classical literature that also includes religious based text. I saw some classics such as McGuffey readers for younger students. I recommend Heritage Humanities for students in High School and College. If your family is big into the original classics this would be a good fit. They have a nice collection of resources and can be paired with English literature or history course. The collection in itself offers many text but the collection as a whole isn’t as ethically as diverse as I would have to like to have seen.

Heritage Humanities resources offer flexibility, and emphasis on critical thinking make it an ideal choice for parents seeking classical resources for their children.
