Beyond the Flame: How Literary Adventures for Kids Helped My Teen Go Deeper Into Fahrenheit 451

When your teen falls in love with dystopian literature, you follow the trail with them. My son recently dove into The Hunger Games, then The Giver, and most recently Fahrenheit 451. But after finishing Bradbury’s classic, he came to me with big, layered questions about censorship, symbolism, society, and why Bradbury wrote the book the way he did. He wanted to dig deeper, not just gloss over the content. I searched for a novel study that could match his curiosity, but everything I found felt rigid, overly academic, or full of busywork. Then I remembered we still had our Literary Adventures for Kids account. To my relief, they offered a Fahrenheit 451 study, and once I opened it, I knew immediately that it was exactly what we needed.

Literary Adventures for Kids (LAK) is an online, self-paced literature platform designed to bring stories alive through exploration, multimedia learning, and intentional Socratic-style questioning. Instead of draining the joy out of reading with endless worksheets, it enhances the experience. The digital layout is clean and easy to navigate, and lessons are structured in a way that encourages deep thinking without overwhelming the student.

What Makes Literary Adventures for Kids Stand Out

LAK avoids the “read-and-regurgitate” approach that turns teens off from literature. Instead, it blends academic depth with interactive, curiosity-driven learning. Students are guided to think critically, question themes, and draw connections between the story and real-world issues.

Some standout features include:

  • Rabbit Trails of Wonder — These guided explorations help students dive deeper into topics related to the novel, such as censorship, propaganda, technology, or Bradbury’s historical context.
  • Socratic-Style Discussion Prompts — Instead of factual recall, LAK offers open-ended questions that push students to analyze, interpret, and evaluate the author’s message.
  • Creative and Multi-Sensory Activities — Journaling, copywork, theme mapping, mini-projects, and multimedia clips enrich the learning experience.
  • Rigor Without Burnout — Lessons feel meaningful and meaty, but never overwhelming or monotonous.
  • A Diverse Catalogue of Books — The platform offers a wide assortment of titles, from classics to contemporary YA, diverse authors, and culturally rich stories.

Inside the Fahrenheit 451 Study

The Fahrenheit 451 study was the perfect blend of analytical, creative, and reflective learning. Each module invited my son to slow down and consider the symbolism that runs throughout the book. The platform included context about book banning, historical events that shaped Bradbury’s writing, and discussions that helped my son articulate his thoughts clearly and confidently.

He especially loved:

  • exploring rabbit trails about censorship and media control
  • watching short, curated videos that expanded his understanding
  • answering Socratic-style prompts that made him think deeply
  • journaling about the ethical dilemmas in the story
  • comparing Bradbury’s warnings to today’s society

This study didn’t talk at him it invited him into a conversation with the text.

A Strong, Diverse Book Catalog

One of my favorite aspects of Literary Adventures for Kids is the variety of books available. Their catalogue includes:

  • classic literature
  • modern young adult novels
  • diverse and multicultural stories
  • high-interest titles teens actually want to read
  • newer releases and timeless favorites

It gives homeschool families the freedom to choose books that align with interests, learning goals, and cultural representation all while maintaining academic richness.

Final Thoughts

Literary Adventures for Kids brought our Fahrenheit 451 experience to life in a way traditional novel studies simply couldn’t. My son thrives on interactive, thoughtful, and well-designed lessons, and LAK delivered all of that with ease. It made him excited to revisit the novel and unpack everything he was curious about. Instead of draining his enthusiasm, LAK amplified it.

If you have a teen who prefers Socratic dialogue, multimedia learning, and meaningful exploration over worksheets, this platform is a gem. It respects how middle and high school students think, question, and understand the world.

If you’re ready to turn novel studies from dry assignments into immersive, curiosity-driven adventures, take a look at Literary Adventures for Kids.

Fahrenheit 451 warns us about what happens when people stop thinking
LAK encourages our students to think deeper, question boldly, and let their love of literature burn bright.

September Update: When Grammar Meets Literature and other Homeschool Shenanigans!

This September has been a month of clarity in our homeschool. If you’ve been following along, you already know my son LOVES grammar. It’s his jam. He gets the biggest kick out of completing his Fix It Grammar lessons every morning. This year he’s working through Level 5: Frog Prince, and let me tell you, this level has been testing my own gangster in grammar. Real talk I’ve started questioning all the grammar instruction I got in high school!

The best part? My son is thriving. He knows his stuff, he’s teaching me things, and grammar has become our daily warm-up before we move into literature studies.

Why We’re Choosing Literature Over Grammar This Year

Here’s the deal: I don’t have to push grammar with him. He’s naturally gifted, motivated, and has an outside writing teacher (Write with Mrs. Brown) who keeps him sharp. Instead of doubling down on something he’s already excelling at, I want to focus more energy on literature studies reading, analyzing, and engaging with stories that challenge him.

We tried an online literature class earlier this semester, but honestly, it was a mismatch. He wasn’t crazy about the book choices, felt unchallenged, and after three weeks, he was done. I don’t let him quit things easily he knows he has to give it a real shot and come to me with a valid reason and replacement plan. He did just that, and I respected his decision.

Now, we’ve shifted into using MyPerspective Language Arts 2025 as our anchor. It’s rigorous, literature-heavy, and provides plenty of resources through the online portal. When we’re not using MyPerspective, we pull from our African American Literature Textbook. Together, these two give him both depth and diversity. We wrapped up Oak Meadow English 8. We have put Oak Meadow Hero Journey for the Spring.

What We’ve Been Reading

If you want to know why literature is our focus it’s because my boy has been inhaling books like air. Here’s a snapshot of what he’s already read just this month:

  • Shatter Me
  • The Giver
  • Twilight and New Moon
  • Forgotten Girl
  • Wabi Tales
  • D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths (reread)
  • D’Aulaires’ Book of Norse Myths (reread)
  • The Land
  • Michael Vey (Book 2)

Coming up for October:

  • CKLA Unit 8: Us, in Progress: Short Stories About Young Latinos
  • Gathering Blue (The Giver series, Book 2)
  • Michael Vey (Book 3)
  • Angel of Greenwood
  • Marcus No Habla Espanol
  • And for November: The Hobbit Illustrated Edition (special thanks to Johana from How We School for the recommendation). If you haven’t checked her out I highly recommend she has a YouTube, and two Instagram accounts. )
  • Indigenous chapters book.

Honoring Our Heritage

October will also be special because we’ll be focusing on Hispanic Heritage Month. As a family with both Dominican and Puerto Rican roots, we’ll be diving into events, food, culture, and history that celebrate and honor our heritage. This adds such a rich layer to our homeschool connecting literature, history, and personal identity all at once.

How We’re Choosing Books

I’m intentional about his book list. We read classics, but not the dusty, put-you-to-sleep kind we were forced to read back in the day, you know in the 1900’s. Instead, I’m curating relevant, diverse, and thought-provoking works that make for strong Socratic discussions. Check out stories of color if you are looking to change things up. I sprinkle in “must-reads” while also letting him choose. The balance keeps things fresh and prevents burnout.

We don’t do a novel study for every single book because let’s be real that’s the fastest way to kill the joy of reading. Instead, we pick one about every 6–8 weeks and dive deep. Right now, I have a few from Moving Beyond the Page lined up for later in the year.

Classes, Math, and Beyond

Outside of literature, he’s thriving in co-op this year with four excellent classes that keep him engaged. One big lesson I’ve learned? Some online classes just don’t fit. Especially in subjects where he’s already advanced, he needs a direct, interactive approach without all the extra noise.

Take his honors biology class he loves the teacher but was pacing ahead of the group, so he transitioned to pre-recorded lessons with the teacher’s support. That flexibility has been golden and allows him to dig deeper into the concepts over the course of the week.

In math, we’re wrapping up Algebra I with Denison Math, and it’s been a great fit. We’re also using Mr. D Math as a supplement. While Mr. D Math is excellent, my son says Denison “gets straight to the point” and eliminates extra fluff. Both have their place in our homeschool toolbox. Speaking of Mr. D Math did you know that Mr. D Math has ELA courses? We will be checking these out for next semester as an option, he is still undecided if he wants to do self paced or live. The great thing is Mr. D is accredited with WASC.

What’s New on the Schedule

I’ve tweaked our schedule to carve out time for:

  • His passion project
  • Community service
  • A few extracurricular activities

These additions are giving him outlets for creativity and leadership outside of academics, which I think is just as important at this stage.

Wrapping Up September

This month, I’ve really seen how shifting the focus to literature has opened doors for deeper learning, critical thinking, and joy in our homeschool. Grammar will always be his strong suit, but now literature is where he’s growing, questioning, and connecting the dots.

So here we are grammar still our daily warm-up, but literature? Literature is our feast.

Stay Tuned because the kiddo is guest writing on the blog………….!!!!

Wrapping Middle School Writing with IEW Structure and Style 2B and Fix IT Grammar!

As we prepare for another intentional and purpose-driven homeschool year, I’m excited to share our continued journey with Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) a curriculum that has not only worked but transformed our homeschool experience. For the upcoming 2025–2026 school year, we’ve chosen to move into Structure and Style for Students Level 2B while finishing up and solidifying Fix It! Grammar Level 4: Mowgli and Shere Khan this summer. We’ll then transition into Level 5: The Frog Prince in the fall.

But before I dive into our curriculum plans, let me share a proud mama moment:

My son placed 3rd in IEW’s 2025 National Writing Contest (Level B) this past spring!

This was not just a win it was redemption. Just a couple of years ago, my son had no interest in writing. He dreaded putting pen to paper and often asked to skip writing altogether. But through consistency, faith, and the right tools like IEW and the guidance of our wonderful writing support teacher, Write With Mrs. Brown his confidence grew. Now, he’s writing for fun, rewriting the storyboard for one of his favorite video games this summer on his own time. That’s the power of the right curriculum, and IEW has truly been a blessing to our family.

Why We Chose Structure and Style Level 2B

After successfully completing Structure and Style Level 1B this past year, my son was ready for the next challenge. Level 2B is designed for students who have a strong grasp on the foundational IEW units but are ready to write longer compositions with more complexity, creativity, and independence.

What We Love:

  • Clear, structured lessons that guide students step-by-step from brainstorming to polished composition.
  • Continued stylistic practice, such as strong verbs, quality adjectives, sentence openers, and dress-ups.
  • A variety of writing assignments, including narrative, informational, and persuasive essays.

How We Take Notes

One effective strategy that’s worked for us is using Cornell Notes while watching Mr. Pudewa’s videos. It helps my son stay engaged and reflect on what he’s learning. This method encourages independent learning and active listening two things middle schoolers really benefit from.

Bonus:

We’re also adding the new IEW resource, Strengthening Structure: Models for IEW Structural Units to our lineup. This newly released supplement takes a deeper dive into the nine structural models that form the foundation of the IEW writing approach. It offers reinforcement and extension for students ready to elevate their writing, perfect for upper middle schoolers like my son.

Who Should Use Structure and Style Level 2B?

  • 6th–8th graders who have completed 1B or equivalent
  • Students ready to increase writing stamina and creativity
  • Kids who still benefit from a structured approach but want room to stretch
  • Families looking for a full-year program that balances academic rigor and confidence-building

Fix It! Grammar Level 4: Why We’re Repeating It

Fix It! Grammar has been a quiet workhorse in our homeschool. Unlike traditional grammar workbooks, this program builds editing and grammar skills through a daily sentence from a continuing story in this case, Mowgli and Shere Khan. Each sentence builds on the previous one, helping students internalize grammar in context.

Even though we already completed Level 4 during 2023-2024 school year, we’re intentionally repeating it this summer. Why? Because I want to solidify his mastery before we move on to the more advanced and demanding Level 5: The Frog Prince in the fall.

Why We Love It:

  • Just 15 minutes a day simple and sustainable
  • Built-in vocabulary, copy-work, and editing practice
  • Great retention from daily repetition and cumulative learning
  • Story format that keeps kids engaged

Repeating Level 4 has already helped reinforce proper punctuation, complex sentence structures, and the use of clauses. It’s been such a helpful decision not remedial, but enriching!

Who Would Benefit from Fix It! Grammar Level 4?

  • Students who are ready to apply grammar knowledge in context
  • Kids who’ve completed Levels 1–3 or are transitioning from a traditional program
  • Learners who enjoy stories and consistent structure
  • Families who want grammar practice without frustration or busywork

A Long-Term Love for IEW

We’ve been long-time IEW users, and I can truly say it’s one of the most worthwhile investments we’ve made in our homeschool. From Structure and Style for Students to Fix It! Grammar, and now integrating new resources like Strengthening Structure, the IEW suite of materials has helped my son:

  • Go from zero writing confidence to contest-winning compositions
  • Develop a love for writing yes, LOVE!
  • Gain skills that will serve him well in high school and beyond
  • Write, edit, and revise with purpose, direction, and joy

IEW gave us the structure we needed, the consistency I craved, and the results we hoped for. While there are other programs on the market for writing, we felt that IEW style is a better fit for college preparation for writing.

Don’t Miss the IEW Podcast + Extras!

Another gem of being an IEW family? Their podcast! It’s packed with practical, encouraging, and insightful content for homeschool parents and writing teachers. I’ve learned so much about how to better support my writer and build a more enriching homeschool experience through those episodes.

The IEW Community: Sales, Freebies & Support for Parents

IEW doesn’t just hand you a curriculum and disappear they walk with you throughout your homeschool journey:

Highlights Include:

  • Live webinars and workshops throughout the year
  • The annual “12 Days of Christmas Giving”, full of generous freebies and digital goodies
  • Ongoing homeschool encouragement and tips from the team
  • Access to free shipping offers and seasonal discounts

Pro Tip: Don’t miss their July Free Shipping Event it’s the perfect time to stock up on wish list items, upgrade your writing program, or grab extras like Student Resource Notebooks, style posters, and themed writing lessons.

IEW Also Offers Live Online Classes

In addition to streaming options, IEW also offers live, online Structure and Style classes! If your student thrives in a structured, live environment with real-time feedback, this is a great option to consider. These courses follow the same methods and reinforce everything we love about IEW but with the added benefit of accountability and instructor interaction.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a homeschool parent looking for a writing and grammar curriculum that builds skills year after year,Structure and Style for Students Level 2B and Fix It! Grammar Level 4: Mowgli and Shere Khan are excellent choices. They work. They grow with your child. And best of all, they encourage a love of words and a sense of accomplishment.

As a mom who once feared her child would never enjoy writing, I can’t recommend this curriculum enough. Here’s to another incredible year of writing, learning, and growing with IEW!

An In-Depth Look at Lightning Literature’s New Storm Level for Grades 6–8

As a long-time homeschool mom and devoted user of Lightning Literature, I was excited to try their new Storm Level designed for grades 6–8 with my middle schooler. Having used Lightning Lit since my son was in 2nd grade and even using the 1st grade level to tutor a younger student. I was hopeful this new level would meet our needs, and it truly delivered.

A Trusted Curriculum, Elevated for Middle School

One of the standout features of the Storm Level is how it elevates the curriculum while keeping the familiar structure we’ve come to love. It’s still rooted in high-quality literature, thoughtful grammar instruction, and meaningful writing prompts—but with added depth and flexibility that’s perfect for middle schoolers transitioning to more independent work.

Multi-Level Grammar Instruction: A Game-Changer

What impressed me most was that Storm Level covers three levels of grammar instruction not just one. This multi-level approach is a huge benefit, especially for middle school students who may need reinforcement in foundational grammar while also being challenged with more complex concepts. It’s excellent for review, while also introducing new material and gradually increasing rigor.

This layering of grammar provides natural scaffolding and allows parents to tailor lessons based on their child’s comfort level. Whether your student needs extra practice or is ready to accelerate, this flexibility makes the curriculum highly adaptable.

Diverse & Inclusive Book Selections

The literature selections in Storm Level are diverse, inclusive, and thoughtfully chosen. This is something I value deeply as a homeschool mom raising a culturally aware child. The books include different perspectives, backgrounds, and voices, which made for rich discussions and connections. Lightning Lit has always done a great job of making literature engaging, but this level truly shines in its inclusiveness.

The New In-House Reader: A Wonderful Addition

Another thoughtful update is the enclosed reader. This addition makes life easier for homeschool parents because everything is in one place. It also helps students stay organized and focused, especially those who benefit from having all their materials together. My son found it easy to navigate, and the high-quality printing and layout made it enjoyable to read.

A Secular Curriculum That Plays Well with Others

Lightning Literature remains a secular curriculum, which continues to be a draw for our family. It easily pairs with other programs especially helpful for eclectic homeschoolers like us. Since we are currently using a different writing curriculum, we didn’t complete all the writing assignments in Storm Level. However, I loved that my son could choose which writing lessons to do based on his interest and what fit his week. That freedom kept him engaged without feeling overwhelmed.

Weekly Checklists & Student-Friendly Design

The weekly checklist included for students is one of my favorite features. It promotes independence and time management, helping students track reading, assignments, and grammar practice. My son enjoyed checking off his tasks—it gave him a sense of accomplishment.

I also appreciated the inclusion of color and illustrations in this level. It breaks up the text, makes the pages more inviting, and adds visual interest. Middle schoolers benefit from a layout that’s clean but not dull, and Lightning Lit hit the sweet spot.

Who This Curriculum Is Ideal For

Lightning Literature’s Storm Level is ideal for:

  • Homeschool families who value high-quality literature
  • Students who need a review of grammar with increasing rigor
  • Families who enjoy secular, flexible curriculum options
  • Kids who learn well through a mix of reading, discussion, and creative writing
  • Eclectic homeschoolers who may use multiple programs and want a curriculum that integrates smoothly

Why We Love Lightning Literature (and Always Will)

Lightning Literature has been a foundational part of our homeschool journey for years, and the Storm Level reinforces why. It’s thoughtful, well-structured, flexible, and encourages a deep love of reading and language. We plan to continue using Lightning Literature alongside our other programs because it offers such a strong base in language arts without becoming rigid or overwhelming.

Unique Features That Set Storm Level Apart

  • Covers 3 grammar levels to support a range of learners
  • Offers diverse and inclusive book choices
  • Includes a colorful reader and well-designed workbook
  • Provides student checklists for weekly planning
  • Encourages student choice in writing assignments
  • Works as a standalone or supplemental curriculum
  • Fully secular and literature-rich

In short, Storm Level is a strong and welcome evolution of the Lightning Literature series one that honors what’s always worked while thoughtfully stepping up the challenge for middle school learners. We love it and highly recommend it to other families looking for a comprehensive, flexible, and engaging language arts program.

Navigating the Classical Literature Journey with Heritage Humanities

We received Heritage Humanities for our honest review!

As a homeschooling parent, I understand the importance of finding comprehensive curriculum that not only educates but also inspires and instills a love for learning. Heritage Humanities is a remarkable find for homeschoolers looking for classical unaltered literature for their homeschooling journey.

Curriculum Content

One of the standout features of Heritage Humanities is its rich and immersive curriculum content. It beautifully integrates history, literature, art, and philosophy, providing a holistic understanding of human civilization. The curriculum is structured chronologically, allowing students to grasp the interconnectedness of historical events and cultural developments. From ancient civilizations to modern times, Heritage Humanities covers a vast expanse of human history, making learning informative.

Heritage Humanities offers a plethora of resources that cater to different learning styles and preferences. From textbooks and primary source documents to multimedia presentations and hands-on activities, there’s something for every student. The inclusion of art and literature from various cultures adds depth to the curriculum and encourages critical thinking and creativity.

Flexibility and Adaptability

As a homeschooling parent, flexibility is key, and Heritage Humanities delivers in this aspect. The curriculum is adaptable to different grade levels and can be customized to suit individual learning goals and pacing. Whether you prefer a structured approach or a more relaxed learning environment, Heritage Humanities provides the flexibility to tailor the curriculum to your child’s needs.

Cultivating Critical Thinking

One of the primary goals of education is to cultivate critical thinking skills. Through in-depth analysis of historical events, literary works, and philosophical concepts, students learn to think critically, analyze information, and form their own opinions. The program encourages discussions and debates, fostering intellectual curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world.

Final Words

Heritage Humanities is valuable resource for those families looking for true classical literature that also includes religious based text. I saw some classics such as McGuffey readers for younger students. I recommend Heritage Humanities for students in High School and College. If your family is big into the original classics this would be a good fit. They have a nice collection of resources and can be paired with English literature or history course. The collection in itself offers many text but the collection as a whole isn’t as ethically as diverse as I would have to like to have seen.

Heritage Humanities resources offer flexibility, and emphasis on critical thinking make it an ideal choice for parents seeking classical resources for their children.

Oak Meadow’s 7th Grade Curriculum has been a cornerstone in our homeschooling journey, providing a holistic and engaging approach to education for our child. If some of you may remember we used Oak Meadow’s 5th and 6th grade last year. We did a hybrid homeschool year and we are doing the same thing this year. The bulk of his spine is Oak Meadow’s 7th grade and he is wrapping up the last of the Oak Meadow’s 6th grade math and will move into the 7th grade math book in March. With that little disclaimer lets jump into Oak Meadow’s 7th Grade Curriculum wonderfulness.

In conclusion, we love Oak Meadow as a company and as our homeschool curriculum. We are here for the long haul and my son couldn’t be happier he looks forward to that brown box every year.

Write by Number Review!

Let me be completely honest with you my son doesn’t like to write, but this year with our curriculum change he became more open to writing. I don’t think my son’s unwillingness to write has anything to do with his inability to write a sentence I think it has more to do with his not knowing what to write and how to organize his thought.

He is moving into middle school in the upcoming school year. I think it’s time that we really target the writing process and get him excited about writing. I’ve looked at several different curriculums over the last couple of months and Write by Number is one that has continually come up on my searches. I first saw Write by Number on a fellow homeschool mom’s Instagram. I decided to take advantage of their 14-day free trial last fall and tuck this program away as my maybe. I knew right away from the trial that this wasn’t your ordinary writing curriculum the lessons are short and your student does not move on until they have mastered that particular stage in the program.

What is Write By Number

Write by Number is a comprehensive writing program for students in grades K through 12th grade. The program is also adaptable for students with special needs. There are 12 stages to the program all students start at stage one. The objective is for students to be able to confidently write an 8-page essay once they have completed all 12 stages. The program focuses on teaching your student to write effectively from the start with the use of sentence patterns. Stages can be completed with your student or independently. If you decide to purchase the hardcover curriculum you will receive a student book which is hardcover and a teacher’s book which is softcover. In the teacher’s book, you will find a section on how to use the curriculum. You will also get some background information on the creator and her recommendations. You will also find workshop videos on the website and the customer service is excellent. Write by Number is not just a writing curriculum students will learn :

  • Edit
  • Grammar
  • Usage and Mechanics
  • Build Vocabulary and Spelling Skills

Student Book

Students will need a separate notebook and it is recommended they use pens that are not erasable. I would also suggest having some kind of different color correction pen to do edits. Each stage is different and builds upon the previous stage. Students will continue to work through all the stages as they continue to learn a new stage as they continue to progress.

The student book can be used with dependent and independent learners. The book is written to the student so it makes an independent student feel confident that this is not your typical lesson. In the back of the student book, you will find grammar worksheets. The worksheets are to be done in your student’s writing notebook separately. What I did notice is that the worksheets don’t necessarily correspond with the stages in sequence so you need to be sure that when your student is using the appropriate worksheet. Students will always know what stage they’re on because they can look on the right side of the lesson book. On the left side is the paragraph structure for the lesson. I find having the noted stage in the margin is helpful for the student because it teaches them to organize their writing.

Teachers Book

The teacher’s book is comprehensive it gives you insight into the creator and how to use the program. At the beginning of each stage, there is a complete overview of the lesson that includes:

  • Common Core Standards
  • Teacher Resources
  • Student Materials

The teacher’s book also makes suggestions of what worksheets to use and the writing evaluation checklist. There are supportive scripts for you to use with your student if you helping your student complete lessons. The directions for each stage are simple with examples and easy to follow.

How it Works

In Stage 1 (power sentence) students will work on sentence structure using the keyword two. The power sentence sets the tone for future paragraphs. I like using the phrase power sentence better than the topic sentence for students. At first, my son found this assignment a little bit tedious. He soon found out that it wasn’t exactly tedious at all, because we spent two weeks just in stage 1. Stage one is your basic how to write a sentence, capitalization, and punctuation. I have no idea why it was such a struggle for him to use the word two in his sentence, but he was having some issues. You and your learner can decide how many sentences you want your student to write in this assignment. We decided on writing two sentences, but he was puzzled about coming up with two sentences that are quality. Observing my son struggle a little bit with this requirement, put things in perspective for me. He has been writing short stories, reports, and essays all year. His issue was not punctuation, content, and grammar. The issue that was hindering his writing was how to organize his thoughts.  The reason why I hadn’t caught this problem earlier is because he and I have always done partnership writing. Needless to say, we did a lot of rewriting in the first week. The second week in stage one was spent building quality sentences and correcting edits.

Lesson Layout

  1. Students write the date in the margin of their notebook page.
  2. Students work on the stage lesson.
  3. Proofread
  4. Rewrite Sentences
  5. Cross youth the original sentences if there were edits
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 if needed

Stage two students are required to write three sentences paragraph. Stage two lesson went over a lot better, his confidence was through the roof. I am happy to report that he did it independently and produced two quality three paragraphs. We only had to do a rewrite once and he was so proud of himself. He read the lesson on his own and completed the assignment. We edited together and he did the rewrite. This time around he was more open to correcting his mistakes and rewriting his sentences. I also noticed his sentences were quality and well thought out. The best part was I had nothing to do with what he wrote!

So, here we are starting stage three at the time of this review. We do Write by Number three days a week and the lessons take 15 mins to complete. I like the rhythm of spending two weeks on each stage and since this is a curriculum that will grow with us over the next few years. I don’t feel rushed to get it done by a certain timeline. I appreciate that Write by Number can be used alongside your current language arts curriculum. Watching my son write his power sentence and rereading his own work, with no assistance from me makes me feel we are on a better track for successful writing.

Hence, I highly recommend Write by Number especially if you have a beginner, reluctant writer, or experienced writer. The lessons are simple and they teach the student to learn how to write correctly using proper grammar, organization, and creativity. To my surprise, my son told me a few weeks ago he wanted to start guest writing on my blog. We recently published his first blog review. It is homeschool convention time if you happen to see the Write by Number booth I highly recommend you stop by and check out the curriculum. At the time of this review Write by Number is still offering its free trial. The cost of Write by Number starts at $99, you also have the option to do the digital pdf reader option at a monthly or yearly cost. If you use Homeschool Planet Write by Number lessons plans are available for $9.95. Check out the trial you won’t be a disappointment. Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple Review

I received the Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple from Timberdoodle Co. in exchange for my fair and honest review.

If you have been curious about the Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind like I have, this is going to be a great review of the Purple Level. Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple is one of 4 books part of the program. The idea is that students should move through all four books by high school. There isn’t a big difference between each text. Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind non-sequential grammar program. Therefore you can start with any of the books and work your way through the program. Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple is a secular curriculum that follows the classical education model.

From basic through advanced grammar concepts, the Purple Workbook provides clear definitions of rules, repeated examples, and plenty of practice. Step-by-step instructions and regular review help every student succeed

Well Trained Mind

Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple is included in the 8th-grade Timberdoodle curriculum kit. My son is gifted in grammar, so we need to provide a rigorous grammar curriculum for him. We are eclectic homeschoolers and I have been looking for a supplement for our upcoming school year. Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple is a 36-week program, there is no hurry to complete a level in one school year. We could possibly do two levels in middle school and the remaining levels in high school.

This innovative grammar program will take your student from the fundamental definition of a noun through a detailed analysis of complex sentence structure.

Timberdoodle Co.

Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple bundle comes with the student workbook, answer key, and core instructor book. The instructor book is to be used across all levels of Grammar for the Well Trained Mind. The purple level is recommended for grade level for students from 5th -12th. In my honest opinion, the rigor in this book would be suited for gifted 5th graders or the spring of the 5th-grade year, but it may be a better fit for a 6th grader. Since we will be continuing this in the fall, I am following the recommendation of just doing 16 weeks and then picking up weeks 17-36 weeks for our school year.

Lesson Layout

Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple as well as the other levels has 3 elements of learning. These levels of understanding are:

  • Comprehension and Memory
  • Examples
  • Practice

As I previously stated there are 36 weeks in the text. Within those weeks there are 4 lessons with exercises per week to complete. Every fourth week there is a review of the previous 3 weeks with 6 exercises. Ideally, high school students should complete one level each year. Younger students can work at their own pace, therefore, completing the 4 levels over a period of time until they completed all four. You don’t have to follow the layout you can work at your own pace and modify as you need.

Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple starts off really basic with nouns and adjectives and provides a hefty amount of practice during the lesson. Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple is a mastery program and I am finding that with my son moving into middle school he needs more of a mastery curriculum so he is prepared for high school and college entrance examinations. Students will master all the grammar and writing skills they will need to be successful in writing and speaking.

The text is in black and white which I like because my son and I both are highlighters. Highlighting for him provides him with a key for referencing when he is working on activities. The lesson is instructor-led, but it is not overwhelming, and the instructor guide is scripted. Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple can be modified for special learners. The purple level can work for students up to grade 12, they will be prepared for college-level English and writing. If you do decide to move to another level you will find the same concepts covered they will just differ in practice questions and assignments.

You can use Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple alongside your spine curriculum or use it as a stand-alone curriculum. I would just adjust how you use it, so it doesn’t become too overwhelming for your student. You can preview Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple sample pages on the Timberdoodle Co Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple landing page.

My Thoughts

I wouldn’t start Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple with a student earlier than 5th grade. I would also start it in the spring of the 5th-grade year. I also think it is an excellent idea to start Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple or any of the levels in middle school. Starting in middle school gives you and your student plenty of time to work through all four levels. Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple has a fair amount of rigor so I would also be mindful of this and plan according to your child’s needs and learning style. The books provide a fair amount of practice and grammar. Students will also practice sentence diagramming. I do like that they do a review after every 3 lessons and the core instructor text that you can use across all 4 levels is a money saver. My son has solid grammar background and is gifted in this area of his studies I have confidence he could probably do the lessons on his own, but because this a program that is used across years I would still prefer to oversee his lessons.

I completely recommend Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Level Purple for rising 6th -12 graders. It is a great program and provides everything your student needs for grammar.

Reading Eggs Review!

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

We have reviewed Reading Eggs previously with the Crew, but this review is a little bittersweet because this is the last year my son will be able to use the online program. I am so sad that my son will be moving on to middle school, but Reading Eggs has prepared him for his next journey in homeschooling.

Reading Eggs has been at the start of our home-learning journey since my son was 3 years old. When we first started the company only had the Reading Eggs and Eggpress. Since then, the company has added, Reading Eggs Junior for 2-4 years to help jumpstart your little learner’s journey to reading with the use of interactive games and stories. Fast Phonics ages 5-10 years helps develop those phonics skills through 20 fun-filled interactive games. Reading Eggs not only features Mathseeds for ages 3-9 but is an award-winning online math program that helps teach your students the foundations of math and problem-solving.

Reading Eggs is an excellent program because it indeed grows with your student through early and lower levels of elementary. No matter what level your student starts with Reading Eggs easy placement test or through the parent dashboard you will find the confidence they will meet your student where they are at. The parent dashboard is comprehensive and gives you full control over your student’s learning path. The parent dashboard also includes a wonderful parent user guide, lesson overviews, a pacing guide, worksheets, and much more. As I am writing this review, I am rethinking what I said early that this may be our last year of Reading Eggs that they also have activity sheets in Spanish those sheets will be a great way to review my son’s Spanish!!! The parent dashboard also allows you to manually change your student’s learning path and or reassign the placement test.

How we used Reading Eggs

So my son is doing a hybrid 5th and 6th grade this year, we used Reading Eggs Eggpress during this review period. Reading Eggs Eggpress is for students ages 7-13, once students complete the original Reading Eggs they move on to Eggpress. Reading Eggpress helps students to learn literary terms, spelling, reading comprehension, and grammar. Eggpress brings that same interactive experience, but at a higher level of learning. Through games and positive reinforcement, students will work on 200 lessons with 220 comprehensive lessons completed with an assessment test. What I really like about Eggpress is that I can adjust my son’s level whenever I would like, but this year I didn’t adjust his year I am letting him rework Eggpress from the very beginning and letting the program adjust for him. I am looking for holes he may have so I can reinforce and review those skills. Reading Eggs Eggpress encourages your students to work on the lessons by giving them targets to hit and earn rewards. The English skills area is phenomenal it not only reinforces grammar it works on spelling. The library section in Eggpress has a nice selection of books on different subjects. My son loves the science section of books, and he is running through the books. Eggpress is definitely for the older kiddos and it just works so well for us and where we are in our homeschooling. I really love the new addition of the journal to Reading Eggs it is great that Reading Eggs is also adding social-emotional learning and mindfulness to the platform.

If you are looking for an online reading program for your family for children ages 2-13, I highly recommend Reading Eggs. Reading Eggs is one of the most trusted learning platforms among homeschooled families. The Crew members have all loved Reading Eggs, so check out the other crew member’s reviews by clicking the banner below.
