Excelerate Spanish Streaming Review!

Many homeschool families look to outside resources such as Excelerate Spanish Streaming from Excelerate Spanish to teach a foreign language. As a Spanish speaking family we have always felt it is important that our son learn to speak Spanish. He learned to speak and understand the language but the struggle is learning to write and read the language.

Excelerate Spanish Streaming is exactly what I have been looking for to give us the in class experience. Excelerate Spanish Streaming is a self paced so there is no rush to get lessons completed. You can watch the lessons receptivity if you need and pause and stop to answer questions. Each lesson is about 30-60 mins long and combines 90% immersion learning approach which is something that I feel is the key to learning a language best.

The teacher speaks clearly and she covers proper verb usage and annunciation. Students will learn how to write sentences, grammar and conversations. The teacher also demonstrates lessons using students and props. We used Excelerate Spanish Streaming videos lessons by lining them up to match the Spanish program we have been using. Pairing the streaming videos lessons were perfect because my son was able to interact and be apart of what looks like a traditional Spanish and it was nice that to have someone else doing the teaching beside myself. The language immersion teaching method I really like because I have a bad habit of speaking Spangilsh to my son which can be very confusing when you are trying to teach how to read and write a language. My son also like seeing and hearing the other children in the videos respond and learn along side him.

Excelerate Spanish Streaming can be used by the entire family and I would encourage a parents to learn along side their child if they are wanting to learn a new language as well. The website has helpful resources including games, flashcards and quizzes. Excelerate Spanish Streaming does have a student workbook ($16.95) which I would recommend if you would like to reinforce lessons learned. Excelerate Spanish Streaming is designed so your student will be able to speak Spanish fluently as well as write and read the language.

We received Excelerate Spanish Streaming 1 and 2 streaming video lessons which is a complete year of Spanish lessons at 24 lesson per session. Excelerate Spanish Streaming for levels 1 and 2 streaming cost $249 there is also an option for monthly cost of starting at $14.97. Families will receive unlimited personal support while using the program.

I recommend this program if your family is looking to learn Spanish, the lessons are well done and students will learn to speak Spanish and proper usage. Be sure to chek out the rest of the Crews reviews on Excelerate Spanish Streaming by clicking the banner below.

Smartick Review!

Let me start this review off by saying WE LOVE SMARTICK!! Words can not express how much my son and I both love this online math program!! Like seriously this math online program from Smartick ranks #1 for this schools years best supplemental math resources. When your student is asking to do his math you know you have found something special.

Smartick is no ordinary app it looks at math from a totally different methodology using problem solving and critical thinking skills to teach children. Smartick is for children ages 4-14 and the company is award winning and delivers results.

Each session is only 15 mins long and students should practice everyday in order to see steady growth. We did occasionally skip a day in between in the beginning but now Smartick is a part of our daily math routine. The program does readjust as your child progresses so if it sees mastery in a skill it will automatically readjust the leveling. I personally was very intrigued by the companies use of logic and reasoning skills to teach math. I love how kids are encourage to look at math in a different way then just using traditional math calculations using this online program.

At first glance my son he wasn’t too sure about it. Smartick starts the kids off with an assessment so it will place them in the correct level. The assessment may take a few sessions if the platform senses the child may be in between levels. Once the proper level is assessed the student begins their practice.

One of the things I really appreciated is that no where on the dashboard area does the child see grade level status. I think this is huge plus for children and parents who have anxiety about grade leveling. When my son first started playing I noticed some skills seemed easy for him but then I also noticed skills that were more difficult. I like this mixed skills because I feel that builds confidence. Can I say THANK YOU Smartick for mental math practice! The mental math practice is so present in Smartick that I could just huge the creators. My son has shown rapid growth in his mental math skills and his recall speed.

The skills sets are broken down into 10 areas and within those areas there are several skills When you click on the each the progress details it breaks down into smaller skill sets within the topic areas and you can see more detail progress. Students work through a series of problems and earn ticks to use to buy items in the their worlds. Students are also given opportunities to go back and correct any questions they may have missed at the end of their session to earn a tick. After the students finish their session they can go work in the Smartick Brain area where all the fun games are located. My sons favorite games were Chameleon and Rush Hour.

Smartick Brain Games are also listed in 4 areas of play:

  • Memory
  • Reasoning
  • Attention
  • Flexibility

The parent dashboard gives you detailed information about your students practice sessions, rewards and skills assessed. You also receive email reminders if your student didn’t complete a daily session. Once a student completes a session an email is generated out detailing exactly how your student performed and what they worked on. Smartick also records the time spent on each session as well as the average speed the student took in each area. Students also earn diplomas as they work through the platform.

There are so many wonderful things I can write about Smartick and how it really works with the child and eases math anxiety and improves math skills. Smartick offers a 15 day free trial and as a follower you can receive an exclusive 25% discount on your first subscription by using our referral code (MAMABR8B7369). The app is available on IOS and has been rated as Apple’s number one educational app for Ipad. This is screen time well spent and I highly recommend.

Secrets of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd’s Stone Book 5 and The Lions Roar Book 6 Review from WorthyKids Books

We were extremely excited to review Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd’s Stone (Book 5) and Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Lion’s Roar (Book 6) from WorthyKids Books. You may have recall earlier this year the crew reviewed Book 3 and 4, the books were such a huge hit in our house that my son was eagerly excited to jump into the next two books in the 7 part series.

I was super thrilled that this time around my son grabbed the books off the table and ran into his room and started reading them without me. While I was little sad at the fact that he started without me this time around I was also really happy. One of the things I enjoy about this series is that they are clean literature and age appropriate for 6- 8 year olds.

In Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd’s Stone (Book 5) our favorite characters Peter and Mary whisked away Bethlehem where they met David. The Shepard Stone is based on the Bibles accounts of David and Goliath. Peter, Mary and David set off on adventure to bring food to his brothers in the battlefield. Along the way the children encounter obstacles and test their faith. This book is such a great way to teach about faith and courage. The book also open the door for discussions about bullies.

Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Lion’s Roar (Book 6) the children begin their adventures in Babylon and they meet Hannah and she introduces Mary and Peter to Daniel who has been appointed one the new governors of Babylon. The three young children uncover a plot to have Daniel overthrown and that’s when the adventure begins. In this books children will also learn about standing firm in their faith.

Along with having clean literature the books are well written and easy for young readers to follow. The illustrations are detailed and there are just enough in each chapter where the children can immerse themselves into the story without being overly distracted. The text of the books are a great size and the paper quality is strong. The paperback cover is thick and sturdy with nice glossy cover.

We really enjoy this series and this time around my son read one book independently and the second one we took turns reading it. My son really enjoys the characters and likes that the book mentions actual countries that we can find out more about. Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd’s Stone (Book 5) and Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Lion’s Roar (Book 6) 14 chapters long with 120 pages.

I highly recommend these books if you are looking for clean literature. I also recommend these for those chapter readers ages 6-8 years as independent reading. These would great as a family read along side religious study.

I have great news if you want to try out the Secret of the Hidden Scrolls WorthyKids Books is hosting a giveaway of all 7 books and will choose three winners to get signed copies of the entire series so far. Click the below banner to enter….Good Luck!!

Brain Blox Wooden Buildings Plank Review!

My son loves to build things with his hands and the Brain Blox Wooden Building Planks Are perfect for him. I love the Brain Blox Wooden Building Planks because they offer open ended play opportunities. The wonderful people at Brain Blox was so gracious to send the Crew a set of the 200 ct Brain Blox Wooden Building Planks .

The planks are smooth and well crafted and I love the wood smell. They are non toxic and made from natural wood. The planks have no stains and dyes they are really beautiful building planks. Kids and play with them indoors or outdoors.

My son loved them because he was able to mix them in with his other toys and let his imagination run wild. He built towers, mazes, marble runs, mazes and a ton of his own creations. Being a STEAM kid he was able to really apply his engineering skills using the planks.

We used the Brain Blox Wooden Building Planks apart of our math lessons with place value and as manipulative for working on multiplication. We used them in our science lesson to study force and motion by building a chain reaction experiment. He also took them out while we were studying the digestive system so he could use them as a model on how food travels through the digestive track. This week we using them to build the Forbidden City in China along side our unit study!

We received the 200 piece kit but the company also has 100 and 300 piece kits. When you go on the companies website they offer free building model ideas. The website is as equally as wonderful as the planks themselves. I found myself going to the website to get build ideas for my son and learning how I could improve his spatial intelligence. There is a wonderful split level level curriculum the the resource section for those early little stem learners.

Brain Blox Wooden Building Planks start at $39.99 for the 100 Ct and 200 and 300 ct price range for $59.99-$79.99. The Brain Blox website currently has a sale going so you can save some money on these great planks. You can purchase them directly from the merchant or Amazon . These planks will make a great holiday present and did I mention they come with this fabulous sturdy storage bag. We definitely love these and they have replaced our current wooden blocks. I highly recommend you grab a set of these for endless amounts of fun.

HiGASFY Art History Video Series Review

Now that we are in the full swing of our new homeschool year I realized that there is one subject area I was lacking. I have struggled with how to add art education to our homeschool but HiGASFY Art History Video Series made it possible to add this subject to my son’s course work! My son is just beginning to like to color and do more art related activities so when the Review Crew was offered the opportunity to review the HiGASFY Art History Video Series I jumped at the opportunity.

We decided to study the Post Impressionist time period, because my son has not had a lot exposure I wanted to pick a time period he was most familiar with to study. I decided he wanted to study Vincent Van Goh. We check out books from the library and studied several pieces of his art work that is included in the curriculum bundle. For this review we used both the HiGASFY Art History Video Series and the curriculum bundle.

The HiGASFY Art History Video Series is a wonderful component to this program Mrs Beth and HiGASFY take the children on a wonderful art lesson of the artist and their art work. The children become fully emerge into the artistic time period. Mrs Beth gives the students artist background and she visually goes over the artist artworks in the video. She includes history and geography lessons as well in the videos. I really appreciated this part in the video series because it made the lessons more personal. I personally don’t know a lot about art and how to present it so this series was a huge weight off my shoulders. My son really enjoyed the videos because they were fun and Mrs. Beth was friendly and he like HiGASFY

The curriculum bundle is really nice, because it is a full lesson plan completely laid out. Each plan lays out objective, suggested activities, critical thinking, vocabulary, writing, geography and science. The curriculum bundle also includes flash cards, game assessments and TEKS for those who are in the Texas area.

The HiGASFY program offers student 4 different art periods to study:

  • Renaissance
  • Baroque
  • Impressionist
  • Post Impressionist

Each time period features 3 artist from that time period such as Monet, Vincent Van Goh, Matisse and Picasso just to name a few. The target grade of 1st- 8th grade with 16 weeks of fun filled art lessons. Parents and educators can buy the DVD set or they can purchase the online option. The video series concluding the curriculum bundle is affordable and starts at $15 a month for 9 students or less.

We really enjoyed HiGASFY Art History Video Series it really helped us kick our art lesson into gear. Be sure to check out the other Crew Reviews on HiGASFY Art History Video Series by clicking the banner below.

Shiftu Oorbot Globe Review

We were sent the Shiftu Oorbot Globe for our honest review. The Oorbot Globe is an interactive globe and app. That is available on IOS and Android and is free to download. The Oorbot Globe is recommended for ages 4 -9 years.

The globe is colorful and lightweight and medium sized. Included in the box is a passport, stamp and stickers. These items are for your student to track their progress as they play. You will need at least 1 GB on your iPhone or iPad if not more in order for the app to work. If you don’t have enough memory for the app you will receive a screen that will notify you.

Even the box says he works for Android you will not be able to use this on a Kindle Fire device…this may include Kids Kindle but since we don’t have Kids Kindle I won’t be able to test this but we did test it on our Kindle Fire and it didn’t work. The company has since disclosed this issue on their profile since we received ours. Android other devices will need at least 3GB in order to use it.

The app has over The interactive component of the globe is to bring to life the special areas on the globe once they are lined up with Star on the globe and tablet. It’s what the company calls “Augmentative Reality” …children can touch the onscreen image and it becomes 3D like and they can learn important information about that region. Not all countries on the continents have interactive ability but there are internal app interactive abilities. The app allows students to go on adventures and solve mysteries, puzzles and travel around the world interactively.

Here is my breakdown:

This is a cute globe for learning about the continents, animals and landmarks. While I think the app would be all that you need in order to learn with because there is an option to use with globe or without globe. My son enjoyed the games and interactive ability.

I was little put off by the memory storage it needs to run successfully on your tablet/iPad. We did experience a lot of app crashes while using it on our iPad, iPhone . We freed up over 2GB of memory just in case and we still had crashes that made my son a little frustrated. As a parent I would have preferred it to able to use on all platform devices especially those designated for children.

I think it is a cute globe and kids will enjoy it. I gave it 3 stars on Amazon because it has a lot of valuable information in the app, I feel like the app needs some bugs worked out. The stamp that is included I don’t think it will survive the life of product. It is a no boarders globe so you will need to open app to see borders. I think it would make a good globe for information while using it along side a traditional globe.

If you are looking for an interactive globe this could be a choice. I would recommend you download the Oorbot Globe app onto your device before purchasing the globe to make sure it will run efficiently on your device. The retail cost of the globe is $49.99 and can be purchased on Amazon and the Shiftu website.

Mom and J

Online Times Alive Review

My son has been asking for months to learn multiplication and I was a little skeptical because we had just finished learning his math facts to 20 and wasn’t sure he was ready for such a big leap. We received a 6 month subscription from City Creek Press, Inc for their Online Times Alive program which was perfect timing for us to start working on multiplication.

Memorizing multiplication facts can be boring and, for some students, difficult, but with the Online Times Alive subscription from City Creek Press, Inc. students learn math facts by watching videos and practicing math facts. Online Times Alive is based upon the best seller book Times Tables the Fun Way. With colorful characters, songs and catchy rhymes this program was huge hit with my son.

We were given access to both the online version and the app version available on IOS 9 or higher. My son enjoyed playing on both versions. I added Online Times Alive to our daily routine during our math lessons. When students first start the are offered a pretest to take to see what their current multiplication knowledge, you can by pass this pretest if your student has no knowledge. Students will learn multiplication facts from 0-9 in fun lessons. Each lesson follows this pattern:

  • Movie
  • Song
  • Quiz
  • Paint
  • Test (every 4th lesson)
  • Progress Check (reviewing the previous 4 lessons)

There is a wonderful student progress dashboard that records all your students data and allows parents to clear data of any lesson that they would like their child to repeat. What I am liking about the program is the catchy rhymes. My son is also an auditory learner and those catchy rhymes have been a huge hit with him remembering the answers. He has done so well with the program that I went ahead and purchased him a multiplication book for him to work in at his own leisure and Online Times Alive has made learning multiplication a breeze. He asks to play all the time even outside of our math lessons.

The Online Times Alive can be used by more than one student on the same computer. Being able to use it with more than one student is wonderful option for large families. The cost is $9.95 per month with a one time sign up fee of $6.95 that is charged upfront (Use the code lovetolearn to waive the sign up fee).  Cancel at anytime.)You can use it on both Mac and PC and the app is available on IOS of 9 on both iPad and iPhone there are two versions the lite and the full version.

I am very happy we were able to review this program, because I was really trying to figure out a fun way to introduce multiplication to my son. Online Times Alive really takes the stress out of learning multiplication. It allows the student to go at their own pace and build confidence.

The workbook covers 36 weeks of lesson with reviews every 9 weeks. There is a year planner included in the book to help with your planning. Students should spend 15 mins per day working on that days skill.

Students will learn:

  • Day 2 Comprehension Lesson – Students dig deeper in the previous days text.

  • Day 5 Grammar Lesson

What is really nice about having both the book and the online subscription you can use the online to help with interactive abilities as well as instructional. We really found this useful in the Eggpress English Skills platform it provided him with more instruction and practice.

My son is very familiar with Reading Eggs online platform we have used the platform for the last 3.5 years he is bumped up to Reading Eggpress the program. When setting up your account parents are giving the option to start their students with a placement test (highly recommend) or let them work the program from the beginning. The parent dashboard provides you with valuable information about your student such as lexile reading level and progress reports. You will also find a collection of resources in the parent dashboard for homeschoolers.

Reading Eggs has 4 different levels so rest assure your student will do well. Each level is created to work with each child’s developmental needs. There are a total of 12 maps giving students a total of 120 lessons in Reading Eggs. The lessons are engaging and self-paced! Reading Eggpress has a total of 220 lesson and goes up to grade 6.

My son gets super excited when he is doing his lessons and we always follow-up with 15 mins of online play as well. He says his favorite part is when he is doing the dictionary and the reading the book and answering the questions.

The 200 Essential Reading Skills for 2nd Grade workbook has made it easy for me to pair it with our homeschool language arts curriculum and add just little more practice and fun to our lessons. I really enjoy the easy to find weekly lessons planner at the beginning of the book because they are so detailed and I can zero in on what I want him to practice. Marine Biology Unit Study

Every year we end our summer science lessons with the study of the ocean. This year we are studying Marine Biology. We are going to be using the The Good and the Beautiful Marine Biology unit study for grades K-5 as our guide, but we will be using other hands on and interest led activities.

The best part of our Marine Biology study is the new Magic School Bus Rides Again Exploring Oceans kit sent to us from The Young Scientist Club. We are both super excited about diving into this kit. My son has been bouncing off the walls since it’s arrival and has been begging to open it.

One of the things I felt was important to include in this unit study for my son was marine biologist. I have chosen Roger Arliner Young, Ernest Everett Just and Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. I had him pick out a few books about coral reefs and animals of interest from the ocean.

We are fresh off from shark week and so he still has sharks on the mind, so the transition won’t be hard. This year for shark week I decided to just let him do his own thing and I just set out resources and let him explore.

So we are ready to kick things off and we will end our unit study with a trip to the aquarium at the end of this month. Now if you want to see a peek inside the new Magic School Bus Rides Again Exploring Oceans kit head over to Little Learner and Mom Instagram Igtv So you can check out the unboxing.

As a special thank you to our followers the The Young Scientist Club is offering 30% discount when you use SCIENCEFUN code at checkout on any of the following subscriptions:

  • Pre-pay 12 months of Magic School Bus science club
  • Pre-pay 12 months of The Young Scientist club

My School Year Review

Traditionally I like keeping written records of our homeschool year in my lesson planner. We received the Annual Membership Plan and I have been using My School Year Homeschool Record Keeping to track summer school and plan out our new school year.

The idea of using an digital planner has always been a little intimidating and out of the box for me. I prefer to write out my plans and have them sitting with us at the table while we have school. I decided I would take a break from ol faithful and give My School Year Homeschool Record Keeping at try.

Setting up our family profile was simple I do like the dashboard that shows my students reports of what is being tracked for him for the academic year. The company has video tutorials and quick guides to help you set up your lesson plans and how to make edits. I did find these videos to be a little confusing and time consuming at times because I am so used to just writing everything out. I continued to push through setting up our plans and worked out the issues I was having along the way.

My School Year Homeschool Record Keeping allows parents to create lesson plans that you can have automatically generate over entire school year. You will need to go into the plan to customize any lessons you would like to customize. There is also an option to add lesson patterns for your created plans and you can add notes and supplies needed whatever you think you and your student may need for the lessons.

There is nice reporting feature that records information that your student does over the course of the school term such as attendance, extra curricular activities, transcripts and many more attributes that families will find helpful to keep a record of and the system allows you to print a pdf so the records can be easily slide into your students portfolio. There is a Teachers Aid that you can use as your personal assistant that helps you stay on task by pointing out to you any important things you need to be reminded to do or fix in your classes.

So here is the breakdown of My School Year Homeschool Record Keeping :

  • Annual Plan is $50 a year with guarantee price lock or $5 a month.
  • Rapid multiple generated lesson planning
  • Extensive recording keeping options
  • Transcripts builder
  • Reading Logs, Awards, Calendar Scheduling many more trackers
  • Mobile Friendly
  • Affordable

My School Year Homeschool Record Keeping does has a bit of learning curve that you will need to take some to get used. The Tutorial videos and guides you will definitely need to make yourself very familiar with before jumping. I would also recommend that you that you plan 1-2 months at at time before planning out entire until you are comfortable with the format. I would recommend this program if you are digital planner and want something a little more comprehensive. I will continue use the platform items that I think would be great for digital planning and use it has my curriculum mapping for the school term.

Be sure to check out the the Crew Reviews on My School Year Homeschool Record Keeping by clicking the banner below and see how they used the platform over the summer and their beginning fall term.
