Reading Eggs Review

If you have not heard of Reading Eggs this the blog post for you. My son has been enjoying the 4 week free trial the company gave us as well as the 200 Essential Reading Skills for 2nd Grade workbook. The 200 Essential Reading Skills Workbooks are available in grade K- 5th. The company also has math books available in K-2nd. Be sure to click the banner below to check out the other reviews on the other books.

The 200 Essential Reading Skills for 2nd Grade workbook is the perfect companion to the Reading Eggs online platform. I was really impressed by the complexity that the workbook covers. The workbook covers 36 weeks of lesson with reviews every 9 weeks. There is a year planner included in the book to help with your planning. Students should spend 15 mins per day working on that days skill.

Students will learn:

  • Day 1 Comprehension Lesson (students can read in the text or locate in the Eggpress online library)
  • Day 2 Comprehension Lesson – Students dig deeper in the previous days text.
  • Day 3 Spelling Lesson – Introduces as spelling rule.
  • Day 4 spelling Lesson – Works on proofreading with the words from Day 3
  • Day 5 Grammar Lesson

What is really nice about having both the book and the online subscription you can use the online to help with interactive abilities as well as instructional. We really found this useful in the Eggpress English Skills platform it provided him with more instruction and practice.

My son is very familiar with Reading Eggs online platform we have used the platform for the last 3.5 years he is bumped up to Reading Eggpress the program. When setting up your account parents are giving the option to start their students with a placement test (highly recommend) or let them work the program from the beginning. The parent dashboard provides you with valuable information about your student such as lexile reading level and progress reports. You will also find a collection of resources in the parent dashboard for homeschoolers.

Reading Eggs has 4 different levels so rest assure your student will do well. Each level is created to work with each child’s developmental needs. There are a total of 12 maps giving students a total of 120 lessons in Reading Eggs. The lessons are engaging and self-paced! Reading Eggpress has a total of 220 lesson and goes up to grade 6.

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Grammar
  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Fluency

Reading Eggs provides students with a fun and easy way of learning to read and grammar. My son gets super excited when he is doing his lessons and we always follow-up with 15 mins of online play as well. He says his favorite part is when he is doing the dictionary and the reading the book and answering the questions.

The 200 Essential Reading Skills for 2nd Grade workbook has made it easy for me to pair it with our homeschool language arts curriculum and add just little more practice and fun to our lessons. I really enjoy the easy to find weekly lessons planner at the beginning of the book because they are so detailed and I can zero in on what I want him to practice. The 200 Essential Reading Skills for 2nd Grade workbook can be used as is or you can customize your flow. Having the 200 Essential Reading Skills for 2nd Grade workbook is like bringing the online Reading Eggs to the table.

This mom is very pleased with the 200 Essential Reading Skills for 2nd Grade workbook and Reading Eggs online platform. We have always been huge fans of the online program and now that the company has a workbook option this is and extra WOW factor and I am loving it and I am looking forward to purchasing the 200 Essential Reading Skills for Third Grade for him next year. Third Grade Literature Guide Set

Every year I try to find a classic book to start our new year of homeschool . This year my son asked if we could read Charlotte Webs by E.B. White . This was a perfect book pick because Memoria Press was gracious enough to send us their Third Grade Literature Guide Set and we used the Charlotte Web Set.

The Third Grade Literature Guide Set features Teacher and Student Study guide for the following titles for Farmers Boy, Mr Poppers Penguins, A Bear Called Paddington and Charlotte’s Web. If you purchase the set you will need to purchase the novels separately.

The teaching guide is a comprehensive and easy guide to follow. I recommend making yourself familiar with the upcoming chapter lesson and read beforehand but this is not a requirement in order for you to do the lesson. The good thing about the literature guide is that you can customize it to best fit you and your students needs. There is a Preparing To Read at the beginning of the both teacher and student guide that is used as guideline how to best prepare for each chapter discussion. You can read the novel to your student aloud, independent read or tag team read. In the teachers guide each lesson and answer key is within the teacher guide so you can follow along.

The student guide is broken down into these areas of study:

  • Reading Notes
  • Vocabulary (words within the novel)
  • 4-5 Comprehension Questions ( older students own or younger students orally then as copy work)
  • Quotations and Discussions Questions
  • Enrichment (variety of activities)
  • Unit Review and Tests (test varies within guides in the Charlotte’s Web Guide every 7 chapters)

At the end of the book there is biographical sketch about the author and reference material about spiders, poetry and a diagram of a spider. Each guide is divided by each chapter in the book and each lesson is 2 pages long.

We used the curriculum during our morning time meeting. We read the chapter for the following days meeting. During our morning meeting we go over the reading notes, vocabulary and comprehension questions. Before we move on I let him watch the original movies clip for the corresponding chapter and then move on to the discussion questions. I always have him point out the differences in the book and the movie which he loves to do. We end with the enrichment activity. This takes us all of maybe 30-40 mins but I like this time with him because have in-depth conversations about the book.

Now here is the breakdown of my review of the Third Grade Literature Guide Set from Memoria Press. I really do like this program it works well if you have morning basket or read aloud routine with your kiddos. You can use the guides as is or you can use it as an oral discussion guide. It can be used to cover vocabulary, grammar and handwriting. I appreciated the no pressure to do a lot of busy work or prepping. If you would like to incorporate hands on activities while reading you can add some farm themed toys, coloring sheets and crafts. The Charlotte Web literature guide can be used as unit study about farm animals or spiders…now you have covered science in your homeschool for a few weeks.

This is a great set and I think it would be a great add on for your homeschool. Memoria press offers literature guides sets for 1st – 10th grade. Be Sure to check out the the other crews reviews of the other literature guides sets.

Dyslexia Gold Review!!

“Some links may contain affiliate links. This does not change the cost to you, but helps me keep this blog running.”

Dyslexia Gold generously provided us with a family license and to Dyslexia Gold Full Bundle. This is an engaging program for children who have dyslexia. There are not many online programs that are geared to children who have dyslexia and that is why Dyslexia Gold is unique in its design. The platform is child focus and evidence based learning.

My son does not have dyslexia , but we found this program to be of great use for him for providing him more practice with his reading fluency, spelling and math. The slowed down pace and the auditory components are wonderful. The Dyslexia Gold Full Bundle included Engaging Eyes, Fluency Builder, Spelling Tutor and Times Table Tutor. Each of the platforms has student reporting so parents can adjust and review what their students have been working on and how they are improving.

We have been working a lot in the Spelling Tutor that is an area my son needs the most work in these days. I love how the Spelling Tutor has the students to grab a paper and pencil and then they listen to the auditory and then they correct their sentence. The spelling tutor works on sentence structure spelling and grammar, the program using dictation as a way to teach spelling.

The Engaging Eyes area ask the kids to focus on an object and track it. Now if you have a younger reader you know sometimes they have a tendency to get distracted by pictures on a page they are reading then they stall with their reading have to track back. The engaging eyes helps improve this issue in both they child with dyslexia and the child without it. I have seen improvement in my sons reading over time he isn’t as distracted when reading.

The Fluency Builder is excellent, I mean that will all seriousness my son has been flying through books since he has been using the fluency builder and his reading comprehension is even sharper. The Fluency builder also works on phonics, speed and segmenting. The struggling reader and dyslexic child will definitely see great improvements.

The Times Tables Tutor is a life saver. We have worked a little on beginners times tables but nothing concrete. I was a little apprehensive about letting him try it out , but to my surprise my son LOVES MULTIPLICATION! He said this made it easier for him to understand and it was fun practicing . I think one the things that made this easy for him is that the program uses legos to teach the students the concept.

So here is the breakdown, parents will see improvement of 12 months if students use the program on average of 10 hours a month playing 15 mins per day. The program is geared towards ages 7 to 11 years that are at least 1 year behind. The program as I have said can be used with struggling readers and those who would like to review skills. The program was created for children who have dyslexia.

The cost of Dyslexia Gold is discounted by 20% for Homeschoolers. Our family was given the Dyslexia Gold Full Bundle family license. Dyslexia Gold also offers a Dyslexia Screen Test at a low cost as well. If you have a child with dyslexia or even just struggling with reading I highly recommend checking out the Dyslexia Gold Full Bundle from Dyslexia Gold.

Hewitt Homeschooling Resources Review!

Today on the blog I am reviewing the language arts curriculum Grade 2 Lightning Lit Set from Hewitt Homeschooling Resources. The company sent us the teachers manual and student workbook. One of the things I have enjoyed about reviewing this curriculum is that it is literature based. We are a homeschooling family that integrates literature based learning in all aspects of our lessons so this curriculum fit right in with our flow.

The curriculum uses a variety of classical books and some new books to help children to develop skills in reading literature and reading informational text. Children are introduced to grammar and composition in weekly lessons. The teachers manual gives very detailed instructions and the ability to modify lessons to best fit your students need. At the beginning of each week you are are given a “week at a glance” to help you prepare for the upcoming week. There are optional materials suggested as well as the grammar and mechanics to be learned in the weeks lesson.

The lesson flow for the week is broken down into 5 days and each day covers the following areas of study:

  • Literature
  • Grammar and Mechanics
  • Composition
  • Reading Journal

In the teachers manual you will find the reading comprehension questions to ask your student after reading the weeks literature book. The Grammar and Mechanics will introduce the concept to practice and learn for the week. The composition portion section each day will work on the creative writing assignment for the week. The reading journal gives the student the opportunity to journal about their thoughts about this weeks. On Day three students will work on vocabulary building and sentence puzzles. Keep in mind this curriculum is versatile and can be easily modified to your learners pace and tolerance levels. There is no pressure to follow the layout, but to make this lesson as frustration free for you and your learner.

We used the curriculum as laid out in the book and my son really enjoyed this new way of learning language arts and writing. I went through the teachers manual and there is an in depth amount of grammar that will be introduced to the student. There are two chapter books that the curriculum uses for read aloud or for independent reading. On day 4 students are asked a question about what they have read.

The curriculum covers 36 weeks of lessons for 5 days a week. In the back of the book you will find an alphabet, handwriting and writing lines resources that can be photocopied for using with the weekly lessons. The course can be tailored to your students needs which is a huge plus. In my opinion you really don’t need to purchase a separate writing curriculum if you are using this curriculum because it covers this area every week. Students will also increase vocabulary and learn how to diagram sentences. The cost of the Grade 2 Lightning Lit Set is $93.50 plus applicable taxes and shipping the pack will also include Random House Book of Poetry for Children.

Be sure to check out the other Crew Review of Hewitt Homeschooling Resources there are many great reviews ona varitey of products.

I highly recommend this curriculum if you are literature based homeschooler or if you are looking for something a little lighter for learning grammar and composition. We will continue using this for the upcoming school year and for the rest of the summer.

Until Next Time,

Mom

Simply Classical Spelling Book One: Step-by-Step Words and Simply Classical Spelling Book Two: Step-by-Step Words Review!

As part of an on going quest to find a spelling curriculum for our upcoming school year, we were sent Simply Classical Spelling Book One: Step-by-Step Words and Simply Classical Spelling Book Two: Step-by-Step Words, Skill level about 1st-3rd grade from Memoria Press to review!

One of the things I have been looking for in a curriculum was something simple and easy to manage without a lot of extra components to the lessons. The way the Simply Classical Spelling lessons are laid out they are familiar to the way I learned spelling.

The Simply Classical Spelling Book One: Step-by-Step Words and Simply Classical Spelling Book Two: Step-by-Step Words lessons were easy to follow and the teachers manual is built right into each of the books.

This series gives your struggling writer an incremental, multi-sensory approach with an oral/aural emphasis. Each week includes targeted Word Study exercises to promote linguistic awareness, cognitive flexibility, and improved spelling skills.

In both books the spelling words are called “Key Words” students will identify Vowels, Consonants, Silent E, Consonant Digraphs, Consonant Blends and Word Families. Then there are the “Words to Know” these words are the exception to spelling rules.

Simply Classical Spelling Book One: Step-by-Step Words students are given 7 words to learn and Simply Classical Spelling Book Two: Step-by-Step Words they are given 13 words to practice for the week. Book one provides 34 weeks of lessons with 30 spelling list and in book 2 students will receive 32 weeks of lesson. The teacher suggested games are also helpful if you want to add variety to the spelling practice. Each lesson can be divided up into five practice days.

My son is pretty familiar with spelling practice so I started him in Simply Classical Spelling Book Two: Step-by-Step Words and we took out our spelling box to practice his “Key Words” and “Words to Know”. I like the fact the lessons also include phonics and a little grammar. The suggested pattern for the lessons are broken down to 4-5days with the 4th day being quiz day and 5th day is for dictation which is very important step in book 2.

Suggested pattern book1:

  • Memorize Monday
  • Hands-on Touch Tuesday
  • Write High Wednesday
  • Thursday Quiz Day
  • Optional Review Day for Book 1

Suggested Pattern Book 2

  • Memorize Monday
  • Tracing Tuesday
  • Word Study & Write High Wednesday
  • Thursday Quiz Day
  • Friday Dictation

Another great component to this curriculum is that if you have a struggling writer this will help your young writers improve their writing skills while learning spelling. The curriculum is appealing to both children with special needs and those who just need a little more support before jumping into a more challenging spelling program.

Simply Classical Spelling Book One: Step-by-Step Words and Simply Classical Spelling Book Two: Step-by-Step Words cost is $14.95 per book plus shipping. There is no separate teachers manual for you to purchase everything is within the books. The only additional supplies I will say you will need is index cards, highlighters or colored pencils. Creating a spelling box is clearly optional for your student and it isn’t mentioned in the books. I highly recommend this program if you are looking for a spelling program to ease your student into and we will continue to use it over the summer.

Adventure Academy Review!

On May 1st  Age of Learning launched a new platform for kids ages 8-13 years old called Adventure Academy. I instantly jumped on the 30 day free trial to check it out for my 6.5 year old. All I can say is WOW!!  Adventure Academy is like nothing I have ever seen before, the campus is beautiful and it immediately reminded me of my old college campus!

img_1466-2

The game starts with the kids creating their own avatars. Parents can set their students accounts up with 3 different learning levels. I started my son on the beginners level. Even though I set him on the beginners level we also were able to change between all 3 levels for learning opportunities throughout the game play.  Part of this month we were studying botany and I was able to do a search within all the learning levels and favorite all the activities related to our study!  The parent dashboard makes it really easy to track down what your student has been doing in the game.

59325790_605122376654850_3104662580732362752_n

Students can make friends on campus and they can invite their real life friends to be friends also if they have an account. My son already has 10 of his closes friends on his friends list. The kids can chat with each other or other players who are really playing the game. Parents have full control over chat feature so you can disable it or set limitations!

Adventure Academy is a fully interactive the kids are instantly thrown into campus life as soon as they start playing. Level 1 of the game play is all about the kids learning their way around campus and meeting their instructors. Learning is all around the kids no matter where they are in the game! The Academy which looks like a prestigious boarding school or college is divided into several different wings. One my sons favorite hang outs is in the science wing. You will see kids running around to get to class and bells ringing! When I tell you they thought of everything they really did in this platform. There are interactive bulletins boards in the foyer as well as inside of the different wings. The atmosphere  on campus is inviting and pleasantly encouraging.

58961467_274140033342634_5799955769600245760_n

The instructors and other staff members walk around campus and the kids can chat with them and go on different quest around campus. There is so much to discover in Adventure Academy that it seems never ending what the kids can learn and do.

The monthly cost is $9.95 for up to 3 students per account. If you take advantage of the 49% off discount during your trial you pay only $59 for the year. This is a great supplement to learning and also just in time to help prevent the summer slide! Be sure to check that your systems meets the operating requirements.

I highly recommend you take advantage of the 30 day trial offered from Adventure Academy  and let your child explore and have fun on campus.

Until Next Time,

Reduce Reuse Recycle Kids Night In Box!

I love Spring time, it just something about it that makes me want to reorganize the house and donate items that we no longer use. So with spring cleaning in full effect, and so much talk about Earth Day I was trying to figure out what could we do for Earth Day this year. Then it hit me our new Kids Night In Box was coming!

This year I wanted to make our spring cleaning purposefully and with this in mind I thought it would be a perfect time to do a mini unit on Reduce Reuse and Recycle. Who better to help me teach such a valuable life lesson than the April Kids Night In Box “Reduce Reuse Recycle”. The box was just what we needed for our mini unit!

April’s Kids Night In Box was perfect, it came with 7 activities for us to do and a cool book and special treat for him to enjoy. That special treat lasted a very short time and has since been added to our grocery list by special request. A complete unboxing of the awesome goodies in this box can be found on our Little Learner and Mom Youtube channel.

My son enjoyed reading the book and working on the recycling activity first then we enjoyed painting flowers on used newspaper. Bubbles are always a huge hit in our home and the Upcycled Bubble Blower activity didn’t disappoint.

So what did he learn from our mini unit using the Reduce Reuse Recycle Kids Night In Box. He learned what it means to recycle and why we should. We explored learning that everyday items we may think are trash can actual be upcycle for art projects or repurposed. He also learned that not all things can be recycle and how to properly sort recycle items into 4 different categories. He made us some delicious green smoothies that will also be in heavy rotation in our home.

You know that special treat that he gobbled up super fast? It was an Envirokidz chocolate bar and we learned about how that company donates 1% of it sales to support endangered animals. This sparked an entire new conversation about helping endangered animals and people. So now he has decided his new service project is to volunteer at our local food bank and this summer we will making lunches at the YMCA for needy kids!

This one box has inspired my son to give back to the community and be more conscious about the planet. This is one the reason why I love this box is because it is “inspired by real life parent adventures.”

It’s not too late to get your own Kids Night In Box. The new May box ships out May 16th-21st. All orders have to be placed by May 13th!

Kids Night In Box Mission Space Review

If you are one of our Little Learner and Mom Instagram followers you know I love pairing our curriculum with unit studies and hands on learning. We recently partnered with Kids Night in Box and we had the pleasure of working through their Mission Space Box. Kids Night in Box is a monthly subscription box service that features an array of monthly themed based activities. Previous themes include finances, manners, gratitude, world community and many more learning experiences. The boxes are meant to be enjoyed as a family and are easy to use. This isn’t your typical box there are several learning activities in each box. The Mission Space box had 6 fun filled space mission and 2 wonderful recipes for us to enjoy.

The Mission Space box was a welcome box for the month of March. We started a new grammar curriculum that paired perfectly with this box. What I really liked is that I was able to extend out grammar lesson with a fun activity from the Kids Night in Box. One day we made the Hot Rockets for lunch and on another day we made the Galaxy Strawberries for dessert after dinner. The reader that is included was a great addition to our bedtime reading time and the reading comprehension questions that are carefully laid out in the training manual by grade level were perfect. One of the missions the children created Rocket Art Work and there is an educational art link provided for your child to watch a step by step easy to follow tutorial. The space themed yoga cards provided were an perfect ad in to our mindfulness time in the morning. My son was super excited about tasting the freeze dried ice cream sandwich this activity sparked all kinds of questions and learning opportunities. I was equally impressed that one the missions was S.T.E.M (science, technology, engineering, math) related.

One of things I really enjoyed is that I didn’t have to purchase any outside supplies. Every thing needed was inside the box. At the end of all 6 mission my son was able to complete his space passport and their was certificate of completion . These boxes are great for homeschooling, family night and extended learning. In this box there was 6 missions and 2 optional recipes so in all you receive 8 activities. The company also included suggestions to continue your learning in the training guide.

Kids Night in Box comes with several different subscription options you can pick which one best fits your family. The company also has faith based boxes available. Orders for the upcoming April box need to be submitted by April 13th 8pm E.T. All boxes will be shipped April 16th-21st. The April box theme is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle we are looking forward to this new box.

If you are looking for something new to add to your homeschool or activities for the upcoming summer days to help prevent that summer learning slide, try out Kids Night in Box .

ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Vol 1 Review

This month the Homeschool Review Crew was given the opportunity to review ARTistic Pursuits Inc. K-3rd Grade Level, Volumes 1-8 . Our family reviewed  Art for Children, Building a Visual Vocabulary, K-3 Vol. 1 (an introduction to watercolor painting methods, color application, paper cutting and folding for beginners). Art has been an area we have struggled with in our home.  Not because we don’t like doing art, more so because I struggled with tryin to to find the time to squeeze it into our busy schedule and program that didnt require a lot of previous art knowledge and supplies.

The Art for Children, Building a Visual Vocabulary, K-3 Vol. 1 program comes with a Blu-ray/DVD for both the student and parent to watch prior to doing lessons. This worked out well for us because we could watch together during lunch time and then apply what we learned after we finished up lunch. This made it simple for me to fit in art instruction without having to set aside a specified time. There are 6 instructional lessons on the DVD and 12 easy to follow text lessons and the art supply list was short and affordable.  Some lessons included in the book are featured in the accompanying instructional video to help you cover some key component. .  These instructional videos are not just for the student they are for the parent as well to help aid with learning. In the Identify and Mix Colors Lesson 4 was great review for us mixing colors to create new colors and using the watercolor crayons. We had fun using different shapes to practice mixing colors.

Children are first introduced to basic watercolor crayons, the company was gracious to send us a set of watercolor crayons and paintbrush. Children will learn to use oil pastels, colored paper and watercolor crayons. The children will also learn about textures, still life paintings, landscapes, and many more art mediums. One plus is children will receive some art history study while doing the course. There are several beautiful paintings in the book and I am hoping that more diverse artist are included in ARTistic Pursuits Inc. K-3rd Grade Level, Volumes 2-8 .  Art appreciation is also stressed in this curriculum children will be presented with the artist and asked questions about the paintings to help further understanding and increase art vocabulary.

The Artist Imagine Lesson 3 was one of the lessons my son really enjoyed.  In this lesson, we studied the painting  The Birthday, 1915 by Mark Chagall. This lesson focused on the children using their imagination about a special event in their lives. My son decide to use the moment he received a very special gift from this past holiday. He paid close attention to his emotions and how he felt seeing the gift laid out on his bed when he arrived home. He and  I spent some time talking about that day and how he felt. He carefully planned out the things he saw and imagine on that day. This was a great lesson for us to connect and bond.

We recently took a road trip and Lesson 7 Construction Paper: Cut was the perfect lesson for us to do. This lesson worked on his cutting skills and he was able to build a paper collage of things that he saw on the road. I really like how he decided to use foam paper for the clouds to give them more of a 3D appearance. He also wanted to show how the moon began to slowly appear in front of the sun as if it was an eclipse which he referenced back to Lesson 3 Artist Imagination and he was able to use that vocabulary when describing this art piece to me. I was really impressed withhis he reflection on a previous lesson and art terminology.

Art for Children, Building a Visual Vocabulary, K-3 Vol. 1 is a great program if you are trying to incorporate more art appreciation in your home. The lessons are easy to follow and the instructional DVD/Blue Ray add a nice component to the program. The cost for Vol. 1 is $39.99 plus tax. K-3rd Grade Level, Volumes 1-8 from ARTistic Pursuits Inc. makes art instruction easy for families!

This year is our math year and we concentrating heavily on mastering basic math skills. My son craves variety during math lessons. I am also looking for ways to keep math fresh and fun. The Everyday Games section for 1st-4th grade gave me a huge selection of games with lessons plans to keep things fun and both of us happy! As a homeschooling mom, a lot of our lessons tend to follow my son interest lesson. He loves science and he isn’t exactly on the 1st-grade science level he is more at 2nd and 3rd grade. I was relieved to find the science section work to our advantage. I was able to lesson plan at a higher level on certain subject areas instead of having to buy two sets of curriculum. He really enjoys the challenge and I really enjoyed the flexibility.

Flexibility is a huge advantage with SchoolhouseTeachers.com the Ultimate Annual Yearly Membership does not limit what grade level you have to work within. You are able you move around in all the levels that best fit your family. For large homeschool families, this may be a huge saving.

Talk about life and sanity saver because I don’t know how many times I have been at a lost with planning meals and adding variety to our rotation.

If you aren’t familiar with World Book digital it’s a great platform that basically has taken the hard book resource and made them available in a digital platform, therefore, keeping them always up to date and offering interactive activities for students as young as Preschool.

The website also has an extensive video library that is stocked with wholesome and clean videos for curriculum and research purposes. They also have religious videos for children and religious study.
