An Animal A Day: A Wildly Wonderful Addition to Our Homeschool Days

A 365-Day Journey Through the Animal Kingdom, One Fascinating Creature at a Time!

We received An Animal A Day in exchange for our honest review from Timberdoodle Co.

If you’re a homeschool parent on the hunt for a stunning, engaging, and educational book to add to your nature or science shelf, look no further. An Animal A Day: 365 Amazing Animals To Take You Through the Year is the kind of book that instantly captures attention and keeps curious minds coming back for more. Whether your family leans into the Waldorf, Montessori, or Charlotte Mason philosophy or just has a deep love for nature this book is going to feel like a perfect fit.

Better yet, it’s been announced that this beautiful book will be included in the upcoming 2025–2026 select Timberdoodle Curriculum Kits! And after using it firsthand during our homeschool mornings, I can tell you it’s an absolute gem.

What’s Inside the Book?

An Animal A Day is exactly what it promises a full year of remarkable creatures, one for every single day. Each page features:

  • A vivid, full-color illustration of an animal (some rare, some familiar, all fascinating)
  • Fun, bite-sized facts that are digestible yet spark deep curiosity
  • The scientific name and geographic region of the animal
  • Occasional fun facts, myths, and natural history notes

The layout is clean, visually appealing, and feels like a cross between a naturalist’s field journal and an artist’s sketchbook. It makes learning feel magical.

Let’s Talk About Those Illustrations

The artwork is nothing short of stunning. Bold yet gentle, realistic yet whimsical it walks that perfect line between textbook clarity and storybook wonder. My middle schooler was immediately drawn to the pictures and spent extra time flipping through the pages even after our morning session had ended.

These illustrations aren’t just pretty they’ve been a launching pad for deeper learning in our home. On more than one occasion, my son has independently looked up more about an animal’s habitat, diet, and conservation status. It’s been incredible to see him take that initiative just from being inspired by a picture book.

How We Use It in Our Homeschool

We’ve added An Animal A Day to our Morning Start-Up routine—what we call our gentle start to the day. With a cup of tea and the sun streaming in, this book becomes a daily moment of connection, curiosity, and calm.

We read one animal entry aloud, admire the artwork, and then chat about the creature’s region, adaptations, and anything else that sparks our interest. Some days we even map the animal’s home on our wall map, and other times we turn it into a mini science notebook entry.

It’s also perfect for:

  • Morning baskets
  • Science warm-ups
  • Nature table displays
  • Independent reading time
  • Supplementing unit studies on ecosystems, biomes, or continents

Who Will Love This Book?

This book is a must-have for:

  • Students in upper elementary to middle school, though even many high schoolers will be enchanted by the quality and variety of content.
  • Animal lovers and budding zoologists of all ages.
  • Families using Waldorf or Montessori methods, who appreciate nature-led learning and beautiful visuals.
  • Charlotte Mason homeschoolers, who will treasure the living-book style and gentle yet rich narration.
  • Nature journalers, looking for a springboard into drawing or writing about the natural world.

Final Thoughts

As a homeschool mom with years of experience curating resources, An Animal A Day has quickly become a top-tier favorite in our homeschool space. It’s rare to find a book that hits so many sweet spots educational, beautiful, engaging, and versatile but this one truly does.

If your child lights up when spotting a creature in the wild or begs to visit the zoo “just one more time,” then An Animal A Day will be their new favorite part of the homeschool day. It has brought a new sense of wonder and exploration into our mornings, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Get ready to fall in love 365 times over.

A Gentler Approach to Math: Master Books Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 4

Hey everyone this is a different type of review, so grab a notebook and a pen and take a few notes. So I had the opportunity to check review Master Books Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 4 for them and I have a few thoughts for those who are looking for a new math curriculum.

Master Books, has a unique approach to math, and their MasterBooks Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 4 is no exception. This curriculum blends a gentle, story-based learning approach with a structured introduction to math concepts, making it a great choice for families looking for a relaxed, yet effective, math program. Below is an in-depth review of its strengths, weaknesses, and how it compares to other math curricula like Abeka Arithmetic 4.

Storytelling helps students connect math concepts to real-life situations. The ongoing story of twins Charlie and Charlotte and their family makes learning engaging and meaningful. This method improves comprehension and application of math skills. – Master Books

Overview of Master Books Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 4

Master Books takes a different approach to teaching math by integrating real-world applications, story-based learning, and incremental concept introduction. This revised edition continues to offer a slower-paced math progression, ensuring students have time to grasp each concept before moving forward. The curriculum is presented in a workbook format with engaging exercises, and the lessons feel more like a conversation rather than traditional math drills.

What’s Included:

  • Student workbook
  • Teacher’s Companion Book (which we received)
  • Optional Practice Book (available for purchase)
  • Access to Master Books Academy (for an additional charge)

The Teacher’s Companion Book provides guidance for instruction and additional teaching notes, while the practice Book offers extra worksheets for those who need additional practice or rigor. I highly recommend purchasing the practice Book if you want to reinforce concepts further or if your child thrives with extra review.

Master Books Academy: A Helpful Resource for Parents and Independent Learners

For families who need additional support, Master Books Academy offers online video instruction for an additional charge. This can be a great option for parents who feel less confident teaching math or for independent learners who prefer self-paced, guided instruction. The Academy provides video lessons that walk students through each concept, reinforcing what they are learning in the workbook. This can be especially helpful for busy parents or those with multiple children needing instruction in different subjects at the same time.

Who Is This Curriculum Best For?

MasterBooks Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 4 is an excellent fit for:

✔ Homeschool families looking for a gentle, Charlotte Mason-inspired approach

✔ Students who benefit from story-based learning and real-world application of math concepts

✔ Those who prefer a slower-paced introduction to new math skills

✔ Families who want a Christian perspective sprinkled throughout but don’t require a heavily faith-based program

✔ Parents who need additional instructional support through Master Books Academy

This curriculum does include Christian values and Biblical references, but they are woven in lightly, making it adaptable for non-religious families who don’t mind skipping or modifying certain references.

Comparison: Master Books Math Level 4 vs. Abeka Arithmetic 4

As someone who has personally taught Abeka Arithmetic 4 Revised Edition, I can confidently say that while both programs are strong, they serve different types of learners. Here’s how they compare:

FeatureMasterbooks Math Level 4Abeka Arithmetic 4
ApproachRelaxed, conceptual, and story-basedTraditional, drill-heavy, and structured
PacingSlower, more gradual introduction to new skillsMoves quickly and assumes prior mastery
RigorOn-grade level (closer to 3rd grade, depending on prior exposure)At least one grade level ahead
Extra PracticeOptional Practice Book (recommended for rigor)Built-in review and daily drills
Christian IntegrationLight Biblical referencesLight Biblical references
Best forStudents who need a gentle, mastery-based approachStudents who thrive with challenge and structured review

If your child is used to Abeka Arithmetic 4 or a more traditional, rigorous math curriculum, Master Books might feel too gentle or slow-paced. However, if your child has struggled with math anxiety or needs more time to master concepts, this could be a great alternative.

Final Thoughts: Is Master Books Math Level 4 Right for Your Family?

MasterBooks Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 4 is a solid choice for families wanting a relaxed approach to math while still covering essential concepts. However, because of its gentle pace and conceptual focus, I would personally place it closer to a 3rd-grade level in terms of difficulty, depending on a child’s previous math exposure.

If your child has already worked through a rigorous math program like Abeka, this may not provide the level of challenge they need. However, if you’re looking for a more approachable, engaging, and confidence-building math program, Master Books is a wonderful choice.

I also highly recommend purchasing the Practice Book for additional rigor, as it can provide that extra reinforcement some students may need. And for families wanting video-based instruction, the optional Master Books Academy can be a great support tool for an additional charge.

Overall, I appreciate the flexibility, gentle progression, and conceptual teaching of Master Books Math Level 4. It won’t work for every child, but for the right student, it can be a fantastic fit!

Beautiful Feet Books: Around California with Children’s Books Pack: A History of the Golden State Review!

(Gifted)

Little Learner and Mom were once again given the honor of showcasing more of Beautiful Feet Books History and Science History curriculums. Our family was sent the Around California with Children’s Books Pack: A History of the Golden State. I was very impressed by the selection of picture books and equally impressed by the books included in the rabbit trails and library recommendations.

When you think of history does California come to mind? Probably not, because when teaching US History we traditionally think about the eastern coast of the United States first and don’t usually venture further west until after the Civil War. Well while the east coast history plays a significant part in US History Beautiful Feet Book Around California with Children’s Books Pack: A History of the Golden State brings the excitement about the West Coast.

Beautiful Feet Books curriculums are a Charlotte Mason-inspired. The company creators are homeschoolers themselves and have been inspiring families for 30 years with their beautiful illustrated literature.

To help homeschool parents ignite wonder and connect with their kids through the best stories and guided lessons.

Beautiful Feet Books History and Science History curriculums

Around California with Children’s Books Pack: A History of the Golden State starts its journey through California’s rich history with the Ice Age. Students will embark on learning about animals during this time period and natural disasters. My learner and I spent time researching the La Brea Tarpits and the weather conditions of the world during the Ice Age. I thought of some fun movies (Ice Age animated series) and suggested documentaries suggested in the lesson guide. Around California with Children’s Books Pack: A History of the Golden State covers history, geography, nature study, culinary history, and art study. Each lesson is estimated to take an hour for grades 4-6. You can find a complete scope and sequence on the product page.

Around California with Children’s Books Pack: A History of the Golden State includes:

  • Teacher Guide
  • 80 Multi-Sensory Lessons
  • Blank Notebook
  • 17 Books
  • Downloadable timeline sheet

What is intriguing about Around California with Children’s Books Pack: A History of the Golden State is the inclusive diversity of lessons presented. I was very pleased to see the inclusivity of African Americas and Asian Americans in the later lessons. Indigenous studies were included throughout the lessons as well which were done respectfully and with attention to detail. The selection of books was broad and packed with beautiful illustrations that held my 5th grader’s interest.

My son enjoyed the relaxed feel of learning about California he really spent time writing his journal and adding to his notes. We spent time painting, reading, and engaging in discussions about animals, culture, and global perspectives of California. We visited the story Kalifia as a rabbit trail we went down. He really enjoys geography, art, and culture.

Around California with Children’s Books Pack: A History of the Golden State is meant to be covered in a complete school year. I can see how one can make this their entire year’s history because it is so much you can do that will combine other historical information about the US in this one curriculum. I hope that in the near future that Beautiful Feet Books will add more states because there is so much to unpack in US History.

What I did notice is when it was time to do the lessons we set up the environment. My son cleared our table and prepared a light snack, set out the materials, and turned on the diffuser with little lavender essential oils. I always made sure there was something art relative for us to do while I was reading the literature for that lesson. He did art, snacked and we talked. I don’t know what it was about setting up the environment this way but it made our lessons enjoyable and special.

We will be stretching this curriculum over the next 2 years and it will become our special interest history. I want to take our time with this one because along with what the curriculum provides I want to be able to include more historical information during certain time periods.

Library finds we added to our studies

At the time of this review Around California with Children’s Books Pack: A History of the Golden State cost is $252.95.
