A Non-Religious Science That Delivers: Our Take on Real Science Kids Level 4

We recieved a copy of Real Science Kids Level 4 for our honest review!

We’ve finished our hands-on walkthrough of Real Science Kids Level 4 (newest release) and this is our final, comprehensive review of the series. If you’ve been following our earlier write-ups of Levels 2–3, this review ties everything together, compares how Level 4 builds on those earlier levels, and explains why this level is especially suited to some 4th graders and not to others.

Overview what Level 4 is at a glance

Real Science Kids Level 4 steps up both the depth and pace of science instruction compared with the early levels. It keeps the series’ hallmark hands-on experiments and approachable explanations, but it accelerates the curriculum: lessons move faster, explanations are denser, and activities expect stronger reading comprehension and independent thinking from students. For a motivated 4th grader who already enjoys science, Level 4 can feel exciting and rewarding. For a student who needs slower pacing or heavy remediation, you’ll want to plan extra time or pair it with more guided instruction.

Topics covered

Level 4 blends life, physical, and earth science in more sophisticated ways. Expect units that include (but are not limited to):

  • Life Science: ecosystems, plant and animal adaptations, food webs, basic genetics concepts
  • Physical Science: matter & its properties, simple chemistry experiments, forces and motion basics
  • Earth & Space: rock cycle, weather patterns, solar system fundamentals
  • Scientific Skills: hypothesis development, controlled experiments, measurement, graphing, data interpretation
  • Practical/Enrichment: lab journals, extension projects, STEM challenges and mini-research tasks.

Why it’s a great fit for many 4th graders

  • Accelerated, rigorous pacing: Level 4 assumes students can read instructions carefully, follow multi-step experiments, and synthesize results into conclusions. That makes it ideal for curious, independent learners who are ready to think like junior scientists.
  • Hands-on emphasis: The experiments and projects are engaging and meaningful they’re not just demonstrations, they ask students to predict, measure, record, and reflect.

Limitations / who should be cautious

Not for every 4th grader out of the box: Because the curriculum is accelerated, students with weaker reading comprehension or poor attention to multi-step instructions will struggle without extra support.

Requires parental/teacher involvement for some students: To get full value, some learners will need guided read-alouds, demonstration of techniques, or pre-teaching of vocabulary.

Pacing expectations: If you use Level 4 as a straight replacement for a slower paced Level 3, be ready to adjust schedule or split some lessons.

How Level 4 compares to our earlier Level 2–3 reviews

When we reviewed Levels 2–3, the series felt very gentle: short lessons, lots of picture support, and very guided, parent-led experiments perfect for early elementary learners. Level 4 clearly intends to bridge to middle-school science thinking: it asks students to do science, not merely observe it. If you used Levels 2–3 in your homeschool, Level 4 will feel like a natural but definite step up. Expect to revisit how you scaffold reading and experiment setup: what worked with Level 3 (read-aloud instructions, step-by-step adult demos) may need to become a bit more student-centered with Level 4.

Teaching tips & pacing suggestions

  • Pre-teach vocabulary: Spend a short pre-lesson on key terms — this pays off on experiment day.
  • Model one experiment first: Demonstrate an experiment as a whole-class (or parent-led) demo, then let students replicate with guidance.
  • Use the lab journal: Require students to write predictions, methods, results, and a short conclusion for every experiment — it enforces scientific thinking.
  • Adjust pacing: If a student struggles, split lessons into two sessions: one for concept + vocabulary, one for experiment + reflection.
  • Pair reading support when needed: For readers below grade level, read directions together or provide a simplified checklist.

Final verdict — who should choose Level 4

Choose Real Science Kids Level 4 if your 4th grader:

  • Already shows curiosity about science, asks “why” questions, and enjoys experiments.
  • Has solid reading comprehension and can follow multi-step directions (or you’re willing to provide a small amount of guided support).
  • Wants a curriculum that accelerates concept development and builds real scientific thinking skills.

If your child needs a gentler introduction to experiments and vocabulary, consider re-reading our earlier reviews of Levels 2–3 and using those as the transition years before moving into Level 4.

Closing notes — our series wrap-up

This is our final review of the Real Science Kids series. We’ve walked Levels 2–4 in previous posts and can confirm the series does continue beyond Level 4 (there is a Level 5–7 tier available for older students). Across the series, Real Science Kids grows from guided, playful experiments into a rigorous, inquiry-focused program and Level 4 is where that transformation becomes most noticeable. If your goal is to accelerate a curious 4th grader toward middle-school science habits, Level 4 is an excellent, thoughtfully designed choice just plan for comprehension support if needed. Real Science Kids Level 4 is a part of the 4th grade Timberdoodle Co Curriculum Kit.

How Homeschool Records Saved Me When I Needed a Transcript Fast

We received Homeschool Records for our honest review!

Recently I was asked to provide a transcript for my son in order for him to apply to a prestigious academic program. I was so relieved that I had already been using Homeschool Records to track his academics through his 7th/8th grade year, especially since he did a hybrid school year last year and is again this school year for 8/9th. Having his records already organized meant that I wasn’t scrambling to piece things together at the last minute. You may also recall I reviewed Homeschool Records last year. We are still using it and I am so glad we are.

When I needed to produce his transcript, Homeschool Records was a life-saver. With just a click of a button, I was able to generate a professional, impressive transcript that looked exactly like what the admissions people expected. No frantic formatting, no last-minute data entry, no worries about how to present hybrid/homeschool credits. I felt confident handing it over.

In-Depth Overview of Homeschool Records

Here’s a deeper dive into how Homeschool Records works, what it offers, and who it best serves.

What Homeschool Records does

  • It’s a web-based platform that allows you to “create, manage & store all your homeschool records in one place” designed especially for Grades 8-12.
  • It covers key record-keeping elements: transcripts & reports, course descriptions, attendance tracking, volunteer/community service hours, reading logs, instructional hours.
  • The workflow: you input your student’s courses (with descriptions, grades, credits) once. Then the system uses that information to automatically build reports, including transcripts.
  • Recently I discovered the new feature of being able to duplicate classes a game-changer for us. For example, when planning the spring term I could duplicate a class from the fall term and just update the grade or status. Huge time saver.
  • Also features like marking a course as “in progress” or “planned” are built in, so the transcript can reflect “this course is ongoing” or “this course is scheduled for next term” which is perfect for hybrid/homeschool students who may have non-traditional sequencing.
  • Sharing courses with other students in your account, this is a great option for multi-family students.
  • The newest launch: a Transcript Evaluation Service — meaning the platform is now offering a review/validation of your transcript to help ensure it meets college/university expectations (in my case, that give me extra peace of mind) small additional fee applies.

Why it was ideal for our context

  • My son’s hybrid school year: Because we were using both homeschool curriculum and hybrid/in-class elements, keeping everything organized was complex. Homeschool Records let me track each component (in-class, homeschool days, online days) under one roof.
  • Middle school into early high school transition: Since we’re moving from 7th/8th grade into higher grades, establishing good records now means less stress later when high school officially begins.
  • Efficiency: I literally spent only minutes entering course descriptions and grades; the heavy lifting (formatting, report generation) was handled.
  • Planning & progress-monitoring: The duplicate-class feature helped me plan ahead and see my son’s progress over time (term to term).
  • Professional look: The transcript output looked clean and credible exactly what is needed when you’re submitting to an academic program that expects high-school-level documentation.
Screenshot

Who would benefit from using Homeschool Records

  • Homeschooling families whose students are entering high-school years (Grades 8-12) and may need transcripts for college, programs, scholarships.
  • Hybrid homeschool families (mix of in-person, online, homeschool days) who want one place to track all academic work.
  • Homeschool parents who want minimal fuss: you enter the data and the system does the heavy lifting — ideal for busy parents who don’t want to become transcript-formatting experts.
  • Families who want to plan ahead: Being able to mark planned/in-progress courses means you can build a roadmap from middle school through high school, making sure you’re on track.
  • Those wanting professional documentation: For admissions, scholarships, evaluations a polished transcript matters, and this platform delivers.

Exciting New Dual Enrollment Feature

And now, Homeschool Records has taken it a step further with the new Dual Enrollment Planner! This feature helps families seamlessly track and organize college-level courses taken during high school, including credits, grades, and institutions. It ensures your student’s dual enrollment experience is clearly documented and professionally displayed on their transcript something that really catches the eye of admissions officers.

The Breakdown

One of the biggest concerns for homeschool parents is creating a strong high school transcript one that truly reflects your student’s hard work and individuality.

What I’ve found with Homeschool Records is that it keeps me accountable for everything curriculum, credits, track volunteer hours, extracurricular activities, electives, and even helping my son build his student resume.

Colleges today want to see more than just academics. They’re looking for well-rounded individuals, and Homeschool Records helps make that possible. Their professional transcripts have just the right pop of color, helping your student’s transcript stand out from the typical black-and-white ones that often get lost in a stack.

One of my favorite features is the ability to add detailed course descriptions when entering classes. This is such a valuable tool! Along with the transcript, you can submit these professional course descriptions to give admission counselors a real understanding of what your student studied and how your homeschool operates.

It’s simply not enough anymore to just meet graduation requirements. Today’s colleges want context and depth they want to know what your student learned and how. After talking with several admissions counselors myself, they all said the same thing: they love when families provide more information about the courses.

Homeschool Records truly takes the worry and anxiety out of transcript creation. It even automatically tracks credits for you! This platform has made the high school documentation process so much easier and far more professional.

My Final Thoughts

If I were to sum it up: Homeschool Records has been one of the best investments we made in our homeschooling infrastructure. Knowing that when that transcript request came, I was ready is priceless. The recent addition of the duplicate-class feature truly made planning for the spring term easier, and the ability to note “in progress” or “planned” courses gives flexibility that’s perfect for the hybrid model.

In short: you (the parent) spend a few minutes entering your child’s information (course name, description, grade, credit, status) and you’re done. The platform handles the rest. It works now as a tracker for 8th grade, but it’s also a long-term solution for tracking from 8th through 12th grade, making it an excellent system for the next several years of our son’s academic journey. The low cost is worth every dime!!

Real Science-4-Kids Book 2: A Full-Circle Homeschool Win

As a homeschool mom, I often reflect on the resources that shaped our early years. One of the very first science programs we used was the Real Science-4-Kids Focus On series, back when my son was in K–2nd grade. He enjoyed it so much, but honestly, I can’t help but wish this new and updated version Real Science-4-Kids Book 2 had been available back then. He would have absolutely thrived with it as a 2nd grader and loved every minute of it.

Now, years later, I’m thrilled to be reviewing this curriculum from the perspective of having used the earlier editions. And let me tell you—this new edition is every bit as engaging and rigorous, with even more structure and vibrant illustrations that make science come alive. Best of all, it’s secular and included in the brand-new Timberdoodle Co. Curriculum Kit 2025–2026 for 2nd grade. For families who value both solid science and ease of teaching, this update is a fantastic addition.

What’s New and Noteworthy in Real Science-4-Kids Book 2

1. Multi-Disciplinary Approach:
This curriculum weaves Chemistry, Biology, and Physics together in one year. Instead of siloing topics, it introduces kids to the interconnectedness of science exactly how real scientists approach the world.

2. Open-and-Go Format:
The clean layout, short readings, and step-by-step lessons make it incredibly user-friendly. I don’t need to spend hours preparing—everything is laid out for both parent and child.

3. Hands-On Experiments that Work:
One of my favorite aspects is that the experiments are doable and meaningful. They don’t require obscure supplies, and they actually reinforce the lesson concepts in a memorable way.

4. Vibrant Visuals & Engaging Content:
The colorful illustrations and clear diagrams make each page appealing. It’s structured enough for serious learning but still fun and approachable for young learners.

Digital Resources Included

Each set comes with digital access to the student book and teacher guide, which is great for flexible learning and printing.

On the Real Science-4-Kids website, you can preview free samples of the curriculum before you commit, and for those who want even more, there’s a Digital Library available at an additional cost. That library includes extended readings, quizzes, experiments, and enrichment opportunities perfect for science-loving kids who want to go further.

From the Constitution to Reconstruction: Our Take on The Nomadic Professor, Us History Part 2

We received Nomadic Professor, US History Part 2 for our honest review!

A year ago, I shared my thoughts on U.S. History, Part 1 from The Nomadic Professor. That course quickly became one of our favorite homeschool supplemental history experiences because it wasn’t just reading from a textbook it was living history. This year, we continued on with U.S. History, Part 2: The Noise of Democracy, and I can honestly say it has been just as rewarding, if not more so.

If you’re starting with early American history, I’d definitely recommend going back to my Part 1 review, but today I want to focus on what makes Part 2 so special for middle and high school homeschoolers.

What Makes This Course Different

On-Location Videos

Dr. William Jackson, the Nomadic Professor himself, actually films his lectures at historic locations. My son and I love this because we’re not just hearing about events, we’re seeing the landscapes and cities where they unfolded. It feels like history is unfolding right in front of you.

Comprehensive Dashboard

Everything you need is right inside the course dashboard—videos, notes, readings, quizzes, worksheets, writing prompts, timelines, and even audio versions if your child prefers to listen. I can’t tell you how much easier this makes my homeschool planning. No piecing things together from five different places.

Encourages Thinking Like a Historian

This isn’t a “just the facts” kind of course. Students are encouraged to weigh evidence, look at different perspectives, and think critically about the story of our nation. My son has been challenged to form his own opinions and back them up with evidence—skills he’ll carry well beyond history class.

What’s Covered in Part 2

Part 2, “The Noise of Democracy,” takes us from the ratification of the Constitution through Reconstruction. It covers the early republic, westward expansion, the Civil War, and the rebuilding of America after. It’s rich in both content and context, giving students the “why” behind the events, not just the “what.”

Right now in our homeschool, we are working through Units 3 and 4, which dive into the Indigenous wars and the Civil War. My son has been especially interested in learning more about how these events affected both Indigenous communities and enslaved people. I appreciate that the course doesn’t shy away from difficult but important parts of history it brings depth and balance to the bigger story of America.

Flexible for Every Homeschool Style

One of the best parts of The Nomadic Professor is its flexibility. You can use it as a stand-alone history course, with everything needed for a full year of U.S. history credit. Or, if you already have a history program you enjoy, it also works wonderfully as a supplemental resource adding depth, visuals, and critical thinking opportunities that many traditional programs lack.

Who This Course Is Best For

  • Upper Middle School and High School Students – The material is geared toward 8th–12th graders who are ready for more depth.
  • Visual and Auditory Learners – Kids who benefit from seeing and hearing as they learn will thrive with the on-location videos and audio options.
  • Homeschool Families Wanting Convenience – With everything laid out in the dashboard, it’s easy for both parents and students to follow.
  • Families Who Like Structure – For added convenience, you can use the Homeschool Planet lesson plans that line up perfectly with the course.

A Timberdoodle Favorite

One thing I especially love mentioning is that Nomadic Professor U.S. History Part 2 is included in the Timberdoodle 10th Grade Curriculum Kit. Timberdoodle is known for curating high-quality, engaging resources, so seeing this course as part of their package really confirmed for me that it’s a strong choice for homeschool families.

Why We Love It

What keeps us coming back to The Nomadic Professor is how engaging and thought-provoking it is. My son isn’t just memorizing dates; he’s learning to understand history, ask questions, and make connections. The on-site videos give us the feeling of field trips without ever leaving home, and I appreciate that the curriculum gives me everything I need without extra prep.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a high-quality history program for upper middle school or high school, I highly recommend The Nomadic Professor’s U.S. History, Part 2. It’s academically strong, visually engaging, homeschool-friendly, flexible enough to be a stand-alone course or a supplement, and even recognized by Timberdoodle as part of their 10th grade curriculum kit. For us, it has been a great continuation from Part 1, and we’re excited to keep going with the rest of the series.

Chemistry Made Clear: Berean Builders Discovering Design with Chemistry

We received a copy of Berean Builders’ Discovering Design with Chemistry for our honest review!

As a homeschool mom who has walked with my son through a variety of science curriculums, I’ve come to appreciate materials that are both challenging and approachable. This year, even while our main focus is Biology, we’ve been diving into Berean Builders’ Discovering Design with Chemistry and I can confidently say it has been an outstanding addition to our homeschool.

Who Is Discovering Design with Chemistry For?

This curriculum is an excellent fit for:

  • Serious science students who enjoy a challenge and want a comprehensive chemistry foundation.
  • Homeschool families looking for a well-structured course that feels like a true high school (or even honors-level) experience.
  • Students with a passion for science who want to go deeper than just the basics.

The tone is friendly, approachable, and conversational yet the material itself is rigorous and engaging enough to prepare students for college-level chemistry. With a few added assignments, this curriculum could easily be used as an Honors Chemistry course. Berean Builders provides students with excellent high school foundation.

Our Experience Using It Alongside Biology

While our primary science focus this year has been Biology, my son’s passion for science naturally led us to start exploring this Chemistry course on the side. The Vocabulary Game-Changer for Homeschoolers : Wordela Review!

We received access to Wordela for our honest review!

As a long-time homeschool mom, I’ve tested my fair share of educational tools and curriculum add-ons. This year, I was offered the opportunity to take a look at Wordela Homeschool, and it has completely transformed how we approach vocabulary in our homeschool especially in more complex subjects like Honors Biology and SAT prep.

Whether you’re homeschooling one child or many, whether they’re in kindergarten or preparing for college, Wordela Homeschool is a powerful, interactive, and easy-to-use vocabulary platform that meets every learner right where they are. The opportunity to review came to us at the write moment. Spelling is one of those areas that is a little tricky. We have tried many curricula, some worked but other just left us feeling unfulfilled or boring. Wordela has definitely become a game changer these last few weeks.

After trying several spelling curriculum, Wordela has come along and made spelling finally stick! – De-Shaun Little Learner and Mom

What Exactly is Wordela?

Wordela Homeschool is an online vocabulary-building platform designed for students in grades K–12, but with robust features that make it suitable for adult learners as well. It’s more than just flashcards and word definitions. Wordela offers adaptive, standards-aligned learning that’s both comprehensive and flexible.

It works by letting parents assign a specific grade level to each student. From there, each grade is broken down into subjects (such as Science, ELA, History, etc.), and within those subjects are topic-based vocabulary lists. For example, if your student is studying Earth Science or U.S. Government, there are vocabulary sets tailored exactly to those lessons.

I like using this better than note cards because it is more interactive and the pictures help me visualize and connect meanings of the words. -Jai age 12

Each word comes with multiple learning options including:

  • Word definition
  • Sentence usage
  • Audio pronunciation
  • Visual cues
  • Spelling practice
  • Word games
  • Quizzes and mastery checks

Students are free to choose how they learn the word (or follow a parent-assigned method), and the program keeps track of progress through levels of mastery making the learning process both self-paced and data-informed.

How We Use Wordela in Our Homeschool

This year, I’m using Wordela Homeschool primarily in two areas: SAT vocabulary review and Honors Biology support for my middle schooler. Honors Biology is incredibly vocabulary heavy. There are so many new terms and concepts to digest and Wordela Homeschool has been an absolute game-changer in making them click. We aren’t goong to stop there because we are also finding it helpful for math and other subjects.

I went through all his core subjects for the year and mapped out every key word or term he’d need. I then matched or created word lists inside Wordela so that before we begin any lesson, he’s already had a chance to interact with and understand the vocabulary in a hands-on way.

Wordela Homeschool gives parents complete visibility and easy control -Wordela

We’ve made Wordela Homeschool the first thing he does at the start of each learning block. It’s become a warm-up routine that gets his brain into gear and gives him confidence moving into more difficult subject matter. Instead of jumping cold into a textbook full of unfamiliar words, he starts with a fun and interactive learning experience that lays the foundation.

Why Wordela Is Working for Us

  • Supports All Learning Styles: Whether your student learns best visually, through repetition, audio, or interactive games, Wordela offers options that appeal to them. My son enjoys moving through the word work at his own pace and in a way that matches his strengths.
  • Multiple Ways to Learn Each Word: In each lesson, students can view definitions, hear pronunciations, use the word in a sentence, practice spelling, and more. This variety keeps things fresh and helps ensure retention, not just recognition.
  • Custom Word Lists: This is one of my favorite features. You can create your own lists—perfect for unit studies, novel vocabulary, spelling practice, or specialized classes. I’m currently building out custom lists for his Law and African Studies classes.
  • Gamified Learning: The entire program is designed with game elements, like points and progress tracking, which keeps kids engaged without it feeling like a chore.
  • Adapted for Homeschoolers: Wordela clearly had homeschoolers in mind when designing the platform. It’s flexible, easy to manage, and works well with any curriculum. Whether you follow a boxed curriculum or create your own eclectic mix, Wordela fits in seamlessly.

Extra Perks of Wordela

  • Parent Dashboard: Easily assign and monitor student progress.
  • Track Mastery Levels: Know which words need review and which have been mastered.
  • Affordable Pricing: For everything it offers—multiple users, grade-level vocabulary, custom lists, and a comprehensive platform—Wordela is very reasonably priced.
  • Standard-Aligned: If you want to stay on track with your state’s standards or plan for testing, this is a huge plus.

Final Thoughts: A Must-Have Vocabulary Tool

Wordela Homeschool has become one of the most impactful additions to our homeschool this year. It’s no longer a struggle to get through vocabulary. My son actually looks forward to it and that says a lot. Whether he’s learning complex biology terms or prepping for the SAT, Wordela Homeschool makes it all feel doable, engaging, and fun.

If you’re a homeschool parent looking for an interactive vocabulary program that supports core academics, personalized learning, and long-term retention, I can’t recommend Wordela enough. It’s one of those tools that quietly does the heavy lifting and makes you wonder how you ever homeschooled without it.

Not Your Average Typing Program: Why Typesy Homeschool Is a Game-Changer in Our Homeschool!

We received Typesy Homeschool for our honest review.

Looking for a typing program that actually teaches something useful besides endless lines of “asdf jkl;”? Say goodbye to nonsense phrases and hello to real learning with purpose. Typesy Homeschool isn’t your typical typing platform it’s a full-blown cross-curricular typing experience that makes homeschool families like ours excited to log on!

What Makes Typesy Different?

Unlike most typing programs that rely on boring drills and gibberish sentences, Typesy Homeschool seamlessly integrates Common Core-aligned academic content right into its lessons. That means while your child is learning to type, they’re also being introduced to science facts, historical context, vocabulary, and more all while building speed and accuracy on the keyboard.

For us, we started with the 7th Grade Common Core course because the topics covered included science themes we were already studying. As we progress through the school year, we’ll move into the 8th Grade Cross-Curricular track, which introduces more complex material like history, language arts, and other interdisciplinary subjects. It’s typing and schoolwork rolled into one smart program. This mom has been using the program also to learn some new things and strengthen my own typing skills.

Learning with Games? Yes, Please!

Typesy also includes a variety of typing games that are both educational and fun—perfect for brain breaks or rewards after assignments. These games reinforce hand placement and speed without your child even realizing they’re practicing. It’s gamified learning done right!

Parent & Student Dashboards Make Tracking Easy

The Parent Dashboard is one of my favorite features. I can:

  • Assign lessons based on grade level or interest
  • Monitor my child’s typing accuracy, speed, and time-on-task
  • Track progress across all subjects integrated into the typing lessons

The Student Dashboard is clean, easy to navigate, and motivating. Students can see their badges, streaks, and real-time progress toward goals. It makes independent work feel manageable and rewarding.

Who Is This Good For?

  • Parents looking for interdisciplinary tools that combine core subjects with digital literacy
  • Families who are tired of boring typing lessons and want something more meaningful

From Kindergarten to Career Prep

Typesy Homeschool isn’t just for kids! There are typing and computer literacy courses for everyone in the family from early learners to teens prepping for the SAT/ACT, to adults and professionals needing to sharpen skills.

Typesy includes:

  • Adult & professional typing courses
  • Vocabulary building (excellent for SAT/ACT prep)
  • Microsoft Office training
  • Google Workspace skills
  • Intro to Coding courses

It’s rare to find a program that grows with your family, but Typesy truly delivers on that promise.

Aligned with State Standards? Yes, Ma’am!

One of the reasons I chose Typesy Homeschool is because it supports our state’s Computer Science requirements, which include a strong emphasis on typing proficiency and subject-matter integration. The built-in lessons help meet these requirements without me needing to piece together a separate curriculum.

Final Thoughts: Why We Love It

In our homeschool, we value tools that multitask with intention. Typesy Homeschool teaches a life skill typing, but does so in a way that supports and enhances our academic learning. It’s not just typing for typing’s sake. It’s typing with purpose, with content, and with fun.

So if you’re looking for a smart, standards-aligned, subject-rich, and student-friendly typing program, Typesy Homeschool is the one. It’s the typing curriculum I didn’t know we needed until we couldn’t imagine our week without it!

An Animal A Day: A Wildly Wonderful Addition to Our Homeschool Days

A 365-Day Journey Through the Animal Kingdom, One Fascinating Creature at a Time!

We received An Animal A Day in exchange for our honest review from Timberdoodle Co.

If you’re a homeschool parent on the hunt for a stunning, engaging, and educational book to add to your nature or science shelf, look no further. An Animal A Day: 365 Amazing Animals To Take You Through the Year is the kind of book that instantly captures attention and keeps curious minds coming back for more. Whether your family leans into the Waldorf, Montessori, or Charlotte Mason philosophy or just has a deep love for nature this book is going to feel like a perfect fit.

Better yet, it’s been announced that this beautiful book will be included in the upcoming 2025–2026 select Timberdoodle Curriculum Kits! And after using it firsthand during our homeschool mornings, I can tell you it’s an absolute gem.

What’s Inside the Book?

An Animal A Day is exactly what it promises a full year of remarkable creatures, one for every single day. Each page features:

  • A vivid, full-color illustration of an animal (some rare, some familiar, all fascinating)
  • Fun, bite-sized facts that are digestible yet spark deep curiosity
  • The scientific name and geographic region of the animal
  • Occasional fun facts, myths, and natural history notes

The layout is clean, visually appealing, and feels like a cross between a naturalist’s field journal and an artist’s sketchbook. It makes learning feel magical.

Let’s Talk About Those Illustrations

The artwork is nothing short of stunning. Bold yet gentle, realistic yet whimsical it walks that perfect line between textbook clarity and storybook wonder. My middle schooler was immediately drawn to the pictures and spent extra time flipping through the pages even after our morning session had ended.

These illustrations aren’t just pretty they’ve been a launching pad for deeper learning in our home. On more than one occasion, my son has independently looked up more about an animal’s habitat, diet, and conservation status. It’s been incredible to see him take that initiative just from being inspired by a picture book.

How We Use It in Our Homeschool

We’ve added An Animal A Day to our Morning Start-Up routine—what we call our gentle start to the day. With a cup of tea and the sun streaming in, this book becomes a daily moment of connection, curiosity, and calm.

We read one animal entry aloud, admire the artwork, and then chat about the creature’s region, adaptations, and anything else that sparks our interest. Some days we even map the animal’s home on our wall map, and other times we turn it into a mini science notebook entry.

It’s also perfect for:

  • Morning baskets
  • Science warm-ups
  • Nature table displays
  • Independent reading time
  • Supplementing unit studies on ecosystems, biomes, or continents

Who Will Love This Book?

This book is a must-have for:

  • Students in upper elementary to middle school, though even many high schoolers will be enchanted by the quality and variety of content.
  • Animal lovers and budding zoologists of all ages.
  • Families using Waldorf or Montessori methods, who appreciate nature-led learning and beautiful visuals.
  • Charlotte Mason homeschoolers, who will treasure the living-book style and gentle yet rich narration.
  • Nature journalers, looking for a springboard into drawing or writing about the natural world.

Final Thoughts

As a homeschool mom with years of experience curating resources, An Animal A Day has quickly become a top-tier favorite in our homeschool space. It’s rare to find a book that hits so many sweet spots educational, beautiful, engaging, and versatile but this one truly does.

If your child lights up when spotting a creature in the wild or begs to visit the zoo “just one more time,” then An Animal A Day will be their new favorite part of the homeschool day. It has brought a new sense of wonder and exploration into our mornings, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Get ready to fall in love 365 times over.

Berean Science in the Atomic Age: A Deep Dive for Science-Loving Middle Schoolers

We received Berean Science in the Atomic Age for our honest review!

As a homeschool mom I thrive on finding the best curriculum for my science-loving son, I was eager to try Berean Science in the Atomic Age for middle schoolers. If your child is not a fan of science, let me be clear this curriculum is not for them. However, if your student is like mine, who loves diving deep into scientific concepts, experiments, and discoveries, this program is a fantastic choice. Berean Science in the Atomic Age is a faith-based, comprehensive and critical thinking science curriculum. Now in my honest opinion I will say that it was not overly religious and so families who prefer secular curriculum will still find this of value.

What You Receive When You Order

When you purchase Berean Science in the Atomic Age, you receive:

  • A high-quality hardcover textbook that reminds me of a high school-level science book. As well as answer key & Test. Comprehension questions and answers can be found in the textboook.

Hands-On Learning with Lab Reports

The experiments in this curriculum are well-planned and engaging. To ensure my son fully grasped the scientific process, I had him write out a full lab report for each experiment. However, one thing I would have loved is if the curriculum had included a lab report template—that would have made things even smoother!

Topics Covered

This curriculum takes an in-depth approach to science and is structured to provide a deep understanding of various topics. Some of the major concepts covered include:

  • The atomic structure and properties of matter
  • The periodic table and chemical reactions
  • Energy, forces, and motion
  • Biological molecules and life processes
  • Earth’s structure and atmospheric science
  • The role of scientists in historical discoveries

While the textbook is incredibly informative, I found that it lacked diversity in the scientists mentioned. To ensure my son had a well-rounded view of scientific contributions, I supplemented with our own resources that highlight diverse scientists and their discoveries.

Experiments and Lab Reports

  • My son completed hands-on experiments included in the curriculum.
  • Instead of just observing results, I required him to write a full lab report for each experiment.
  • I would have loved if the curriculum included a lab report template to make this process more structured.

What I Wish Was Different

  • The comprehension questions were great, but I wish they were on a separate printable instead of only in the textbook. I later discovered that there is separate student notebook sold, but by different vendor. It was not available on Berean Builders website.
  • A lab report template would have been a fantastic addition to the set.
  • Greater diversity in the scientists mentioned would have enriched the learning experience, though I supplemented this with our own research.

Who Would Benefit From This Curriculum?

  • Students who love science and want to take a deep dive into complex topics.
  • Middle schoolers ready for high school-level content* presented in an engaging and structured way.
  • Homeschool parents who enjoy a structured, textbook-based science program with strong academic rigor.
  • Families who don’t mind supplementing with additional resources* to ensure a well-rounded science education.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Berean Science in the Atomic Age is a fantastic curriculum for science-loving middle schoolers who want to explore advanced concepts. It is not a light or casual program, so I would only recommend it for students who truly enjoy science. Despite some minor drawbacks, this curriculum will remain in our science loop rotation as a valuable and rigorous resource for our homeschool.
